Miracle Gro College

Okay, now here is a true college miracle. My son prior to this school year would best be described as...'easy going' (or inert). He was your basic do what you love to do (jazz piano, theater lighting, philosophy chat boards, Dilbert and Onion comics, Bill Bryson books) kind of guy. At Christmas, although he would be taking 5 flights to reach us, he didn't make the first stab at reservations until 3 days before he left school. He probably still has unopened graduation cards from last year. Basically anything in life he did not want to engage energy for was by definition, 'not a problem.'

Against that backdrop, I have to be amazed at the information contained in 4 emails this week (this alone a true feat):
1. At a poetry reading he had the Pulitzer prize winning author sign and personalize with an anecdote a book for his grandparents' upcoming 50th anniversary.
2. He forwarded to me information from the college cashier about new payment policies at school, "just in case you hadn't received them."
3. He made travel reservations for May and August and made the effort to secure the cheapest flights.
4. He spoke with his current advisor and upon learning this Prof will be out of the country next term, he immediately secured another advisor who has taught a class he has done well in this semester.

He hasn't won a prize, he hasn't cured any diseases and he will probably deny the unopened graduation cards. But, if this all isn't a miracle, what is???

Roby:

I love it. I'm waiting for a miracle to happen to us. There's hope yet, isn't there?

My husband and I had a glass of wine to celebrate, I kid you not! If he can do it, anyone can!!!

Gives me hope for my S, only a HS freshman now.
Love "Miracle Gro" College concept!

It's true!

Robrym
Would you like to bottle the stuff and sell it to me?

Wow! is all I can say. As parents what else better can you ask for than miracle growing while at college. That's kind of the idea, isn't it?

Roby,

That is AMAZING!!! I am having nightmares about next year already~I've probably done WAY too much for all of my kids for most of their lives. But, you have given me HOPE for the future! lol Maybe, just maybe, this will be MY son next year! lol :) ~berurah

Hope for my son, the wayward 8th grader. Wow!

My son is also the lukewarm guy in things he does not like to do, intense in things he likes to do. He's gotten a job on campus without my asking....so that's progress.

As much as we all hate to stereotype the sexes, it does seem that very often the boys are the late bloomers. Part of it is that they don't feel the need to please everyone all the time, so they move forward on their own schedule. Congratulations, robyrm!

Where does he go to school? S1 needs to transfer there!
