I know that I definitely want to major in Mis, I'm interested in technology and business processes. I also plan to complete a minor in Informatics. What business concentration should I combine with MIs?

I attend Drexel University.

Concentrations:
Accounting- Can't stand, very boring and too much math. It didn't click with me.
Economics- Not interested
Entrepreneurship- I have some interest, but I think its a weak major in general.
Finance- Not interested
General Business- Useless
International Business- Weak Major
Legal studies- Useless
Marketing- Interesting major to me. I'm not sure if it will be useful though. Mis and Marketing are both completely different concentrations.
Operations Management- This is what I was thinking about. It fits well with Mis and I think it will give me the most opportunities.

If it's not worth it, I will just stick with Mis/Informatics.

liljay, accounting is not math. It is arithmetic. (Just one of my pet peeves since I have degrees in accounting and engineering.) Having said that, it is my opinion that accounting goes with MIS better than any of the others and will give you the most opportunities. I would however say that operations and supply chain management goes well with it. Looking at the OpMan minor, I would suggest the Six Sigma class.

thanks for the recommendation. And yeah I have heard good things about the accounting/mis combo. After taking two accounting courses, I realized that I have no interest in it.

liljay, I understand the accounting dislike. I taught accounting for a few years. One other thought is I do like the Op Man better than Infomatics because it gives you an extra skill. There is some overlap between MIS and Infomatics.

Yeah I see what you are saying. I might as well get the Informatics minor, it could take the place of my general education electives. It’s also giving my GPA a boost.

Boosting the GPA is never a bad idea…well, almost never.

I realized that Accounting is actually not as bad as I thought. I decided on an Accounting/MIs double major.

liljay, that’s a great choice. You should have plenty of opportunities when you graduate. Good luck.

Hey geo, one quick question? What opportunities are available for an accounting/mis double major besides IT auditing?, even though that’s what I intend to do.

Also, is finance/mis as good as accounting/mis?

IT consulting, IT security, business analysis, project management, software development, database management, systems analyst to name a few. The CIO at my company has an accounting degree and got into IT early in his career. You can probably get into some of those with a finance degree too, but don’t quote me.

I do think the IT auditor is an good place to start. If you get in the Big 4, get your CPA, you can then make the move to consulting at some point or even stay in audit and move up that way.
