I applied to American University as a transfer student in April. Got accepted in May. But totally forgot to send them my Fasfa and CSS profile. I went to a transfer information session on Friday only to find out the deadline was March 1st and tuition is 50,000. I went to the financial aid office and they told me there is a 99% chance I will receive no money. Is there anything I can do?

My sister applied as freshman this year also but didn't get accepted, she turned in all her info on time (same exact information). Do you think I could use hers or am I totally screwed?

Any advice would be appreciated.

At this point, unfortunately, all the financial aid available has probably been distributed. Don’t give up, but I’d start making plans for what you’ll do if you don’t end up getting any aid.

No you cannot use your sister’s financial aid application information for the school. BUT you can use the information on it to complete your OWN financial aid application.

I would have to agree with others…you missed the deadline by over 3 months.

Having said that…if your EFC per FAFSA is $0, you would qualify for the maximum Pell grant which is an entitlement program…funds do not run out and this is about $5000. AND you would also get a stafford loan. If you are a sophomore, you would be able to take out $6500 in Stafford loan monies. These are both federally funded programs.

I guess I’m confused…if your sister had already submitted the info, it would have taken a VERY short time to complete those forms in your name…but I guess that is water over the dam.

American doesn’t guarantee to meet full need for its applicants. My guess is most of their institutional aid has been dispersed. BUT if it were me…I’d complete the applications ASAP…if for nothing else for the Stafford loan.

You need to talk to your parents…and figure out what to do next.

And for others reading this. DO NOT MISS DEADLINES…and also have a plan for paying for the college before you apply. If it requires completing financial aid applications…remember to do them.

I don’t think you can do that. However, you can ask. The fact of the matter is that since your sister was denied, her financial aid process was ended right there. No award was given to her.

Complete your paperwork right now. Since your sister did do hers, it should not take you long. If you qualify for any state/federal aid, that may still be available. Also American just might come up with something for you if there is money left in the till from those who decined their offers. However, I do want you to know that that is a rare thing. Also, typically, transfers do not get the same consideration as the freshman admits.

You can ask for a deferral on admissions. But find out some info that you should have gotten when you initially applied. What is American’s fianancial aid policies towards transfers? What could you have expected to get, had you turned in the info in time? What is available for transfers each year? It is possible that there was never much in the pot for transfers, and for you in the first place. American just might not be an affordable school for you. Need to know that before deferring or winging it on full loans or breaking the family bank this year on the presumption that you will get a nice fat award next year. It may well not happen.

Your sister’s FA info can be used by YOU for you to fill out your FAFSA and CSS.

Even if you had applied on time, you may not have gotten much aid since transfer students often don’t get that great of packages.

The truth is that this is a long-shot at this point, so you need to figure “Plan B”. Did you apply to your local state U? Is it too late?
