My FAFSA too late? :[

I submitted my FAFSA for SFSU the end of April when the state deadline was March 2nd. Do you think I'll still be able to receive grants/loans? They said I was eligible for a 4,400 dollar pell grant and I'm hoping for at least a 10,000 loan in addition to that. All my friends almost got a full ride when they submitted there's.
If not, I'll have to settle for community college, but the thing is the classes are filling up really quick and I have yet to take my placement test. No placement test=no registration.
So I'm sort've in a Catch-22 situation here.
What should I do? If it's too late for FAFSA, what other reliable financial aid programs are out there I can still use?

It’s not too late for the Pell grant. The pell does not have a deadline.

There are campus based programs such as SEOG, Perkins loans, and Work Study that have very limited funding. Missing priority deadlines means those funds are probably already gone (if you would have been eligible in the first place). Also State aid deadline tend to be firm.

The main federal student loan is the Stafford loan. If you are a freshman and a dependent the maximum Stafford is $5500.

The above is correct, and no way you should borrow $10K/yr, even if you could.

Really? Apparently my friends say you can get loans up to 22K.

So, there’s still a possibility that I’ll receive that Stafford loan?

I’m not sure what kinds of loans your friends got that were $22,000. The maximum Stafford is $5500 as noted for freshman. IF your school has Perkins loan money left, you could get a couple thousand more in Perkins loans…but it would not add up to $22K.

I believe you have missed the deadline for Cal grants (someone from California would have to verify that), and as Swimcatsmom noted, most limited fund monies are probably not available any longer.

But see what happens.Yes…by completing the FAFSA, you will be eligible for Stafford loan and you will get a Pell grant if you are eligible for that.

And in the meantime, discuss your college financing with your family and find out what THEY can and will do to help you with your costs.

*least a 10,000 loan in addition to that.

Apparently my friends say you can get loans up to 22K.*

Your friends are wrong unless they are independent (married, over 24, vets, etc). They may have been able to take out their own Plus loans or other loans if they are independent.

you will be limited to Stafford/Direct loans. You may not get a Perkins loan at this late date.

However, the Calif publics have been very good to EFC 0 kids this year.

Actually independent undergrad students cannot get PLUS loans in their own names. They do have a higher Stafford loan max ($9500 for a freshman). But PLUS loans are for parents or for graduate students.

I am guessing the OP’s friends parents have the loans rather than the friends themselves.

I believe the calgrant deadline is march 2nd.

^^^

Thanks for the correction. I confused independent grad students with independent undergards.

If you missed the deadline, you may miss Calgrants which are now approaching $10k for a UC.

Perhaps it would be smarter to take a year off and begin next year with timely filing for forms to get the full aid package. There may also be SFSU grants you missed.
