just got the decision back from my math department and they won't let me enroll concurrently in calc 2 + discrete math even though i've taken a section of it in theories of computation. So i'm not sure what to do, i've been trying to get in contact with ucsc through phone calls and emails, but the advising office for comp sci hasn't returned any calls to me =(. Only thing i think i can do is try to register for Discrete math for comp sci major @ UCI for winter semester and hope it counts toward ucsc requirement, but im not even sure if my tag will be valid if i take a course at UCI since it a 4 year uni.

just curious… why? Don’t tell me the prerequisite for discrete at your school is Calc 2 lol. At mine, we only need pre-calc to take discrete =)

Your TAG will be valid, so don’t worry about that , as long as you don’t go over 80 or 90 combining units from CC and 4Y. You should check the TAG matrix for that one.

And you should check nearby CC and see if they will offer Discrete in the spring before taking it at UCI. Missing 1 out of 5 foundation courses for UCSC can be disastrous, even though they are not that strict about pre-reqs like the bigger UCs

yup. calc 2 the requirement even tho i’ve taken a section of it in theories of computation. the thing that is really weird is. If i take Trig @ the sister community college i can take discrete math…

If you have completed all of the requirements for TAG, including the 60 UC transferable units plus the seven course pattern, and the CMPE 16 is only course you you will be taking over the the summer. You can take the CMPE 16 course over the summer.

Is the email response i got a while back from UCSC. It says i can take it over the summer, but also at the same time it part of the 7 course partern. In the end im really only missing discrete math, and ill have extra major course like computer architecture and software engineering.

Then congrats, you are good to go at UCSC lol. You don’t need to dumb down and take trig lol, just show the sister college your transcript and have them clear pre-reqs for you. I take physics mechanics at another college by showing them my transcript which indicate completion of calc1

Come to think of it, that’s weird. I thought only 4-yr uni like Cal requires sophomore math maturity (completion of Calc2) to take discrete… never know some CC requires Calc2 as well

no no, what i ment was. To take the discrete math at my college all you need is trig from the sister college, but since i go to my college they want calc2. I don’t have a semester to go take trig for no reason =(.

I’m confused now lol.
Since you have completed/is taking Calc1, doesn’t that mean you should have cleared the trig requirement for discrete? O_o

yah lol =P, i also took trig here during my first year. xD overall it just hilarious and frustrating at the same time.

lol, you should talk with a counselor and have him/her clear the pre-req for you so you can take discrete. Taking it at CC is much easier than at UC anyway lol. But honestly, it wouldn’t be THAT bad to take it at UCSC since discrete, IMO, is the most important math courses for CS or CSGD majors anyway.
