Hello all!
I am a current CC student and apply to transfer this year. I major in mathematics, and will complete all the major prerequisites by the end of this spring but except for the Discrete Mathematics. Thus, will not completing the discrete mathematics affect my chance to be accepted to the UCs? I have a GPA of 3.8 up to now and hope that I can continue to do well in the spring. What are my chances to get in UC Berkeley, UCLA and UC San Diego (TAGed)? Thank you guys in advance!

If I am able to complete discrete mathematics in summer 14, will they consider it?

I remember reading somewhere that Berkeley prefers you to take their discrete math course, so in that case it probably won’t affect you much. Not sure about the others.

Yeah, I saw on the assist.org that says Berkeley recommends students to take discrete math in the semester after transfer. But I am afraid that UCLA requires students to take this course by the spring prior to transfer. I hope UCLA will accept any courses in summer since I will try to get this course done if my college offers it in summer. But I am not sure whether discrete math is a critical major course in admission determination by UCLA?

You don’t need it for UCLA to transfer. You only need Calc I-III + either DE or Linear Algebra.

@CSB111,
Sorry bro, I should mention that I applied for the joint major Mathematics & Economics. I saw on the assist.org that I need to take discrete mathematics to fulfill the major prerequisite of introduction to discrete structures in UCLA. Does that mean I must take this course in Spring prior to transfer? Thanks for all the help!

You still don’t need to take it to be accepted, but if its offered it would be better to take it at CC. From talking with a UCLA counselor she has told me that ALL math majors at UCLA (including Math/Econ) only require those classes, and discrete math can be taken at UCLA. But if Discrete Math is offered at your CC, it is ok to take it in the spring prior to transfer.

@CSB111,
Thanks for your help. Yeah, my CC offers discrete math but unfortunately I find it conflict with my another course since I have already set up my schedule. But if I take discrete math in summer, will UCLA consider and accept it since it is still prior to transfer?
BTW, how do I find out the communication methods with UC Berkeley, UCLA and so on to ask them some questions about transfer? Email preferred.
