Inspired by my last thread (LOL) but have any of you all ever been on a mission trip? Where to and what was it like. I've been thinking about it lately because I really want to put my life to good use .

Yes, when I was 11 I went along with some adults from our church to Nicaragua. That trip gave me a whole new perspective on faith and wealth.

And as a secondary benefit, I never waste food anymore.

No. I do useful things with my time.

^ Wow. There almost nothing more useful than going to a third-world country on mission work. It’s not about the help you give them, it’s about the help they give you.

If that wasn’t a joke, it sure is that there are people out there with that mindset lol

I’d honestly rather spend my free time playing CoD.

^ See? You’d make a perfect “before” for mission trips.

If I was religious, yes. Since I’m entirely without an opinion and couldn’t care less, no.

^Way to step up to the plate.

^^^
Same

I dont want to brainwash 3rd world hoi polloi with religion.

That is kind of my mentality. Yeah, I know that religion encourages helping others, but that helping others always comes with a catch. People are perfectly fine with being their animistic ways, though I suppose that’s where I split with the religious.

I’d rather do it without being encouraged by some higher being. Our intrinsic goodness as human beings, I suppose.

@Mosby - i dont think anyone is opposed to helping people, some of us, however, are morally opposed to doing it in the name of religion

Yeah, I take frequent charity trips. To help people in Haiti, New Orleans, or just down the street to help someone chainsaw a tree that fell on his driveway during a storm. None of it is sanctioned by any religious group.

The concept of mission trips further propagates the myth that morality and charity is a product of religion, and in an agnostic society all hell would break lose.

Agreed. While my statement was pretty harsh, I do not think religion should be one’s driving force to do good. Those who think spreading Christianity is “helping” people… that’s the joke.
