Mistake on your college application? This is for you.

@ decanela: I think you should email them, just in case. I mean, that’s still pretty significant, so it’s not going to hurt you or anything.

And I just realized that I forgot the hyphen in fun-loving on my Princeton app. I put funloving instead. Oh god, they’re going to think I’m such an idiot. Idk how I could have msised that, b/c I checked my supplement 498023483290 times. Everything else is fine, but that word was against a sea of white space, so it’s really obvious. If it was in an essay, it might have been more discreet.

I put my gpa in the wrong space and forgot to list a dual credit class. i’m scared!

i spelt the schools name wrong in an email while asking a question. Twice.

OMG I have made already three major mistakes. My dad keeps giving me hell about it, but I can’t help it sometimes.

I accidentally submitted an app I wasn’t done with and stilll had lots of errors on it. I had to email the admission office and ask them to change some stuff.

I had an error on my transcript (I took the same class twice, according to my transcript) and forgot to change it until the day after the transcripts were sent to all 9 of my colleges.

I asked stupid questions to adcoms in emails only to go on the school website and see the answer for myself.

I’m pretty much screwed.

I misspelled “mannerisms” as “manniersms” in my 150 word Common App essay about my favorite EC, even after looking it over 5 times. My friend made fun of me for that – then again, I’m quite used to him poking fun at me, so the consequences weren’t too great  Hopefully the adcoms will be just as careless as I was and overlook it… :p

This thread is going to keep me up at night! There are so many things that can go wrong . . . I would rather not know.

I forgot to put a space between school and year. So it reads “I volunteer in the summer and the schoolyear.” I’m mad at myself, but I don’t think I have any other mistakes. And I hope it doesn’t make a difference in my admissions.

I wrote “one” instead of “on” in my early decision supplement essay to Brown. Just realized a few days after submitting it.

I forgot to write that I was an AP scholar in my Honors section.

I didn’t pay attention to the preview and cut off the descriptions in the activities section.

And not on the common app directly, but my counselor made a mistake in my rec letter. She wrote that I wanted to pursue a certain major at the college but on my common app I applied undecided. Oops.

Actually, having one or two small mistakes in an application may actually be a GOOD thing. It shows the student actually did the application by themselves, as opposed to having a highly paid consultant “edit” it.

That’s not a mistake. In fact, not including it won’t really make an impact on your application, especially not if you’re applying to top schools.

In my ED application, I spelled course Modern Russian History as “Morden Russian History”. My consoler read it but did not notice. She use to work at the school I’m applying to, so hopefully the current admission will not notice it either. Fixed for RD applications.

i accidently put ap spanish literature instead of ap spanish language for current courses on the common app!!! is that a big deal and should I email the admission staff? my transcript will say ap spanish lang by the way.

thankssss!

I submitted my rough draft (absolute crap) for one of my questbridge essays accidentally, instead of my much more reasonable final draft. Still a finalist but I don’t think I’ll be matched anywhere (for that reason and others).

When I applied to TASS I sent out the application before actually completing it. I completed half of the “application” portion then started working on the five essays and then never went back and finished the app. I also sent it in a day after a deadline (post offices close too early). Still got in :P.

when i created an account for my non-common app school, I switched up my first and last names. Now, I get e-mails for Smith Tony.

its pretty funny, except I had to e-mail the college to change it (“please accept me, even though I can’t correctly fill in a form…”)

Oh well, at least i made this mistake once, and with my safety.

I think all of you are extremely courageous. This process can be grueling, and accepting that you are human is incredibly admirable. All of you should be proud for just the fact that you can, or are trying to reconcile the fact that you have made a mistake. We will all make mistakes in our lives, some minor, some major, but the important thing is that we refuse to let these mistakes inhibit our futures. Admitting that you are worthy, despite your typos, spelling mistakes, and other imperfections, is the first step to overcoming your disappointment and living a life of meaning and learning.

On one of my activities sections, I accidentally added an extra s to the end of a word, so it sounds weird.

if you left off, or made a mistake on the form, write the school. They really are ok with this sort of thing. If you messed up an essay, ask the school if you can send them a corrected essay. If not, do not sweat it.

My daughter decided just a couple of days ago, to go ahead and apply ED at her #1 choice, and submitted the application last night. She forgot to check off the ED box on the “Future Plans” section, though she did on the common app. Because of this, we did not get the ED agreement to sign. While she freaked out, and did some research, and realized I could print it out, sign it, and send it snail mail.

She wrote to the school to explain what happened, and they wrote back this morning to tell us to do exactly what I had already figured out.

Relax, none of this is a big deal. No school is going to reject you because you make mistakes filling out forms. But do let them know.

I’m not sure if I have had any typos - from what I saw double checking I think I submitted it clean. (Fingers crossed!)

However, a good friend of mine has an unweighted GPA of 3.617. When she typed it in, she put in 3.17, and didn’t notice until AFTER it was submitted.

EDIT: I forgot, I DO have a typo story myself!

My top choice school is UCONN. On the supplement, there’s a section that says “If you have indicated on the Application that you play an instrument, sing, etc. please specify here.” I left it blank, but I play the piano… maybe not that big of a deal… but I wrote my ESSAY on the subject haha!
