MIT 2016 hopefuls

Wow…it’s such an odd feeling to be so close to applying!!!

@momo888 : hey is there any supplemental info u going to provide while applying for scholars program? nd under which subject/category are u goin 2 apply?
best,
@whateverhappens : yea…true…and its time for high school class of 2012 to start discussing their college plans (:

@hannan: you mean summer programs? i’m just doing whatever the application requires. no extra fluff. i might send in one extra rec for RSI if i can make my chem teacher to magically stop procrastinating. i did go all out on my essays and stuff though. i’m doing applied math and/or statistics.

i can’t wait to apply college… can’t wait to get out of high school >__<

Hey everyone! I’ve always wanted to get a career in mathematics, but I’d never really considered MIT. Over the past few months I’ve been looking at it, and I’ve honestly fallen in love, which is probably sad! But MIT is such an amazing school and I love the Boston/Cambridge area.

I’m definitely getting either a major or minor in Mathematics, but I’m really interested in their Aerospace Engineering major as well. Honestly, I’d probably double major.

And I just took my SATs in December, and they’re giving me some hope :slight_smile: It may be a bit early, but good luck everyone!

I am gonna take the toefl on 11th March. Hope to reach my goal.
I need a great score on the SAT in order to cover my gaps.

I will take both SAT I and SAT II in my senior year. I mean, I am very busy right now and I think that it’s not the right time.

Is it orite to take SAT sub tests in senior yr.what do you guys say?

@MITdecode
Considering how much other stuff we’ll be piled with during senior year, I’d reccomend against it. But it’s more than doable.

@edoardo; @MITdecode

Don’t think it’s too late or that things will be too busy for you to handle. Start now and you might be surprised with the results you find along the way. Personal experience.

Nobody’s posted in a while… hey, MIThopeful16–“I’m a diehard cs + computer engineering dude, but I’m gonna double major in cs + math… and concentrate in CS on either Human-Computer Interaction or Artificial Intelligence.” … You sound a lot like me :smiley: except that I probably won’t split with math… I have found an immense passion in all things electronics and CS. I’m in APCS, and I’ve programmed Arduinos for fun and for a Lemelson-MIT InvenTeams project, as well as programmed a FIRST robot in Java and led a programming team for MIT’s Zero Robotics programming competition. although I do like math too… I applied for RSI (CS/Robotics fields) and MITES (even though I’m not really a minority) and will be taking the SAT in March. I hope I can do well on the SAT, because I feel a personal need to make up for a failure with my PSAT this year - I think I might’ve almost made the cut for National Merit, but on two write-in math Q’s, I got the answers right, but wrote them on the answer sheet in the wrong order… :stuck_out_tongue: so frustrating… Anyway, I’m glad someone’s started this thread now. I’m probably only going to apply to MIT, CalTech, and GA Tech, with MIT being the preference. (The campus is amazing! :D) However, I’m not a straight A student… so… I guess we’ll see how it goes. Good luck everyone! I hope I get to know everyone on this thread a little better within these next several months and crossing fingers meet you (eventually) in Cambridge!

Rumor has it that next fall, HYPS will all have single-choice early action, so our job may have gotten a bit easier.

@ techogecko : welcome to cc dude,yea…kinda looks like we gt similiar interests…(: but i m planning to major in cs + physics. mit lemelson thing sounds interesting. will they provide grants for international students for their projects bcoz i did get a mail from the team,but didnt really revert.You can share your thoughts here on how u gonna craft your app. lets make it kinda innovative thread here by discussing a wide range of topics from admission tips to programs, recommended prep work, interests,summer programs student life etc. Gud luck wd ur SAT xams, i wl be taking SAT on May 7th.

@MITdecode: Unfortunately, I don’t think Lemelson-MIT InvenTeams has ever had an international team. I am not led to believe that they might start allowing international applications in the near future, but I am not really sure. However, I don’t think they mail out advertising anyway… see this page: [IMPORTANT NOTICE: EMAIL SCAMS | The Lemelson Foundation](Contact | The Lemelson Foundation)
That worries me a bit… good thing you didn’t reciprocate, I guess xP Anyway, thanks for the luck, and good luck to you too! [:
I will pretty much just focus on my experiences and ambition in my apps. I don’t know if it’s a good idea to try to send a few interesting programs I’ve written as supplemental material, but I will take some of those and maybe some electronics I’ve worked on to my interview… Input, anyone? Is sending that as a supplement a good idea?

I don’t know exactly which schools I’m applying to, but this is definitely going to be one of my reach schools. I do have a chance of getting in, but I’m not going to set myself up for disappointment if I can avoid it. Of course, if I do get in with a good enough financial aid package, my decision is made, but I have other schools that I’m fine with too.
I’m taking the SAT I in two weeks and on the practice tests, I have been getting above 700 on every math section (with one 800), so I’m hoping to replicate that on the actual test (and I know I can get 800, if I check my work and avoid stupid mistakes).

I wish I could say my goals as decisively! There are just too many interesting fields of science that draw my attention all of the time pretty much, so although I know physical science is a yes, which path therein is a hard question.

About double majoring, does MIT allow that? When I visited I thought that they didn’t allow double majors, because I am also thinking about doing a double, when I figure out which set to do, but not at MIT. Rice on the other hand, do as many majors as you like…

Yes, you can double-major at MIT – the most you can have is two majors and two minors. You just need to complete the required courses for both majors.

I plan to apply EA this fall. I have decent Test scores, straight A’s, and hard classes. I’m very involved in our Math Club and have dabbled in a few other ECs. I think I’m a competitive applicant, but I keep doubting myself, seeing all the people on CC who have done actual research(closest thing I have is a research proposal). I’ve also taken quite a few AP tests and done well on them, but it seems that won’t matter as much. I hope that I can write decent essays, since that will most likely be my weakest point.

If I get into MIT, I’d like to do a double major in Biology and Chemistry.

I more than likely will be applying thru Quest Bridge. Hopefully majoring in Computer Science.
I have good grades, retaking standardized testing in October and November. EC’s are pretty good, wish i would have done more. I did normal high school 4 years compressed into 3, with virtual school classes, not giving me the chance to be involved in many clubs.
2 internships positions, (Web design at a middle school, IT department at bank)

I keep wondering if I should apply or not, but at the end it doesn’t hurt to apply. :)

@ MITdecode: I know a guy who did that…I guess if u score higher than 600 in CR, it’d b quite a better proof of english proficiency

Question about the short answers on the MIT app – does anybody know if these are actually supposed to be “short” answers (as in typical short answers that are about a paragraph in length or about 200 words), or should they be whole-length essays (with intros and conclusions)? The maximum word and character counts specified for each question seem to be very large for a “short” answer.

obey the word limit. you should still fully answer the question no matter if it’s a short answer or full “essay.” I don’t think college essays ever have Intro, Body, Conclusion like essays in school do, at least not formally.
