MIT 2016 hopefuls

The application doesn’t allow you to put more than 100 words for the major and fun prompts or 248 words for the others. (I had 250-word stuff… :()

It actually just warns you if you go over. I believe there’s a box you can check to “override” the warning.

As far the actually effect in admissions of going over, I have no concrete idea. I do think that I remember reading in a post by Matt McGann that you should be okay as long as you don’t shrink the font on the application preview thing, though.

I have a quick question. So I didnt think of applying to MIT until recently. I have taken a couple SAT Subject tests because a few other schools I am applying to require them. However, MIT requires a math AND a science subject test and my science subject test score is not very good… I got 770 in Math II, 730 in Math I, and 630 in Biology without studying (aside from taking AP classes). Do you think this is adequate or should I take the physics one in January (I’m currently taking AP Physics)?

^630 is low. I would take another SATII and this time study. However, if you’re taking physics in January, will you be only halfway through the course? You are not likely to do well on it if you haven’t taken the whole AP course.

The biology SAT II is very doable if you study a little, trust me.

As for taking the physics, it depends how rapid/good of a self-studier you are. The practice books can actually be quite helpful for the technical subjects, because unlike with other things, there isn’t a huge volume of things you need to know beyond them. They at least predict the problem types you should study pretty well. Although I suspect the SAT II in physics involves more breadth than I know of (I only took the AP exams).

I applied early action. I’m not worried at all about my test scores, but my GPA is a bit low in my opinion, 96 Weighted. Does MIT place emphasis on the SAT IIs, or they are above 700, then do they just move on? I have a 780 Math II and 710 Physics.

The problem with my SAT Subject scores is that I took them in the midst of my 4 AP exams. Taking AP Biology helped a little bit but the AP course went for depth not breadth so I knew more details about a smaller range of topics than the surface of a large range… that’s probably why I did so poorly on the SAT Bio.

Interview, tonight, at Barnes and Noble.
I’m gonna die.

That could be an interesting interview, but probably quite distracting too. Good luck!

Dying during an interview severely impedes your chances of attending MIT or any other school. Thus, dying is highly disrecommended ;)

Interview tomorrow at Panera Bread lol

Yeah so im done with MIT for undergrad. Interviewer told me that MIT really only looks for the brightest in the nation/world and that you need to have a clear mindset and be heavily prepared already in your intended field.

He and I agreed that MIT would be more suitable for graduate school for me.

^interesting conversation you had there with your EC o.O

Anyhowwww. My interview went pretty well. It was at my EC’s job…in his office. But it wasnt too nerve wracking…but I kinda didnt know what to do with my face when I wasnt talking/he was talking. Im sure I look freaked out. lol

My interview was ok…she was really nice just kept talking, and I kinda sat there and tried to look like a pleasant person. I had mad stupid answers to her questions though.
All in all, I don’t think it helped or hurt me.

My interview’s Friday. I’m kind of nervous … hope it goes well/I don’t say anything awkward.

Cortana,

Seriously?

Had my interview today … it wasn’t awful but it wasn’t great either. He showed up 15 minutes late and had scheduled someone right after me, so it wasn’t very long (only 20-25 minutes). I basically monologued the whole time, because he barely asked any questions.

My interview was awkward. At this guy’s office. My parents made me wear this really ugly suit (and believe me when I say my life’s callings don’t involve suits). He asked me a lot of questions that I answered, but we had really nothing in common, and then he asked me if I had any questions and I didn’t. I should have brought questions to ask…

Whatever. My neighbor went to MIT and used to do alumni interviews and he said that they are more to rule out the next Unabomber than to discriminate between qualified candidates. I don’t know how true this is though.

Incidentally, were the Unabomber’s intentions even detectable as a young student applying to college?

I’m not sure if they were or not. Anyhow, he went to harvard and not MIT so…
