MIT Class of 2019 EA Results Thread

Decision: AdMITted

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown M/CR/W/Essay): ~2250; taken once
ACT superscore (breakdown): 35; 12 essay
SAT II (subject, score): 2x 800; 1x 770
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
AP (place score in parentheses): 4x 4s; 1x 5
Senior Year Course Load: most rigorous
Number of other EA applicants in your school: 3
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel, etc.): Siemens, iGEM, ZR, etc.

Subjective:
Extracurriculars: Intensive research, great leadership, heavy family responsibilities, run a small business, self-published novels, etc. Did everything I wanted to do, and went out of my way to do them well. No regrets.

Writing (Subject, 1-10 rating, details):
Essays:
What You Do For Pleasure: 9.5 - very risky, but it worked
Department at MIT: 6 - had the most trouble with, revised completely for 3-4 times
Trait Most Proud Of: 7.5 - I liked it but my friend said it’s a ‘trite’ trait
World You Come From: 10 - It’s me. My identity, my life.
Significant Challenge: 8 - risky as well. I didn’t write about my most significant challenge, I just wrote about a significant challenge on one of my special ECs.
Additional Essay/QB Essays: sent a QB essay about diversity and what I have contributed.

Other (teacher’s subject, 1-10 rating, details):
Didn’t get to read any recs, so here’s my guesses:
Teacher Recommendation #1: 8-9
Teacher Recommendation #2: 6-7
Counselor Rec: 5 (2 guidance counselor for the whole school)
Additional Info/Rec:
3rd: 10, a professor from Harvard who I got to know from my interest in Bio
4th: 9, math teacher
Interview: 1; I was convinced that I would be rejected after the interview. (However, all other applicants had reported similar experiences so I guess MIT adjusts the scale accordingly)
Art Supplement: 8
Research Supplement: 9
Makers Portfolio: 7.5
Date Submitted App: 11/1

Reflection
Strengths: I love MIT.
Weaknesses: Interview.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I did what I love and believed that colleges will see that.
What would you have done differently?: Nothing. I value being myself more than getting into a college, but being able to do both is amazing.
Where else did you apply? Caltech, Purdue, IU - admitted. Didn’t hear back from anywhere else yet. It’s still early, so I am going to keep my options open.

Other Factors:
Many, but my application cycle is not over yet and I must be vague to remain anonymity. I did want to post on CC in an admitted students thread for a pretty long time, though, so here I am.

General Comments & Advice:
Be yourself. Do what you love and do it well. If you don’t like something, don’t do it. Also, don’t let more than four people read your essays and take any advice with a grain of salt. Take some risks too.

Reflection
Strengths: Good leadership, research helped, also unique perspective on science.
Weaknesses: Math Sat, connections between essays
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I was happy with my application, but there were around 600 people whose applications were more appealing than mine. My math scores could’ve looked stronger as well.
What would you have done differently?: I may have taken math II instead, or maybe explained in the additional info that I was not able to take math junior year because of scheduling errors. Other than that, I don’t think I would change anything.
Where else did you apply? Fordham (Tuition), Temple (Tuition), Northeastern (University Scholars, Tuition), Clark (Half Tuition and opportunity for Ride), Stony brook (pending), Loyola (Pending), Louisiana State University (Tuition, competing for Stamps Scholars), Bard (Pending).
Writing (Subject, 1-10 rating, details):

Other (teacher’s subject, 1-10 rating, details):

Teacher Recommendation #1: Calculus teacher & robotics team sponsor, 10
Teacher Recommendation #2: English teacher who absolutely adored me, 9
Counselor Rec: Didn’t know me at all, had us write our own letters…, 6
Additional Info/Rec:
Interview: Fun but very early (early September) and so didn’t contain a lot of my accomplishments or details about things like the internship that I hadn’t done yet
Art Supplement:

Other
Date Submitted App: October 26-ish?
U.S. State/Territory or Country: TX
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Mixed
Gender: F
Income Bracket Range: $100,000+
Hooks (URM, first generation, recruited athelete, development): Nope

Reflection
Strengths: Robotics team founder, major teacher’s pet, naturally good test scores
Weaknesses: Lack of major awards, did nothing in the summers, too much of a goody two-shoes to really be a risk-taker
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Luck and I really emphasized how much research I’d done on MIT and how it would help me. I tried to cover how I fit every aspect of the qualities they’re looking for and I told my teachers and interviewer explicitly that MIT is my dream school.
What would you have done differently?: Not start the essays so early (I seriously started last year because I wanted them to be so perfect…) I ended up throwing all that out and writing them all from scratch the same day I submitted it about a week before it was due.
Where else did you apply?: University of Cambridge, UT-Austin… Planning to apply to more RD but no need now!

**Other Factors: **

General Comments & Advice:
Don’t stress overmuch about it - I know that’s easier said than done but the essays I’m proudest of I just wrote in a spurt of productivity. It also probably helps if you can prove why MIT uniquely suits you - special programs or opportunities you want to take advantage of that show you’ve done your research.

Writing (Subject, 1-10 rating, details):
Essays:
Almost entirely written in the hour before the deadline.
What You Do For Pleasure: 6.
Department at MIT: EECS and STS. 9. Fascination with efficiency, potential, and cultural impact of computers. Desire to innovate and leave an impact.
Trait Most Proud Of: Positivity/passion. 4. Optimism, idealism, effect on others.
World You Come From: The Pacific Northwest, my family, schools I’ve gone to. 8. Hella liberal, environmentalist, focused on social awareness, exploring lots of options, critical thinking, global impact, desire for knowledge.
Significant Challenge: Trapping myself in mental blocks and panicking in the face of essays. 9. Trying to gather so much evidence so I would have the “correct” answer that I never got around to writing something. Judged myself too harshly. Wrote about facing that challenge and getting my shit together (happened at the end of my freshman year, if you couldn’t tell by the shift in grades). Wrote about my current work ethic and how I now love my work.
Additional Essay/QB Essays:
Other (teacher’s subject, 1-10 rating, details):

Teacher Recommendation #1: Math teacher/advisor. Hoped she could balance out the low math scores - I was one of her best students, and she’s always said in comments that math seems effortless to me. I don’t have her this year, but she’s made effort to chat with me and stay invested in my academic success.
Teacher Recommendation #2: History teacher. I’ve gone above and beyond in her classes more than any other - extra reading, research, all that. I’ve guest taught a couple classes for her. She’s very enthusiastic and seems to be quite fond of me, so I think she wrote something good.
Counselor Rec: He had me as a student back in 7th grade and said he could still write an excellent teacher recommendation because I left such a positive impression. As the Upper School Head, he’s had to deal with my frequent requests for more challenging schedules and knows how driven I am. We’ve had a lot of good talks in our meetings and I think he understands me as a person very well.
Additional Info/Rec:
Interview: Not good. Loved my interviewer, but it was my first interview and I hadn’t prepared. Social interaction isn’t exactly my forte. Lots of long pauses, odd tangents, and circumnavigation. Mostly talked about how in love I am with data and analysis.
Art Supplement:

Other
Date Submitted App: November 2nd. A couple minutes after midnight. I assumed it had the same rules as the Common App and the deadline was in my time zone.

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I’m an okay applicant for MIT, but you have to be much better than okay to get in. I was quite sure this would be the result.
What would you have done differently?: Prepared. For my interview and my writing supplement. Wish I had started much earlier.
Where else did you apply? EA: Chapman and Case Western Reserve. Admitted to both. RD: Brown, Harvard, Stanford, Pomona, University of Chicago, and Yale. Throwing myself at all of them and hoping I succeed somewhere.

What You Do For Pleasure: I wrote about cutting signs out at NHS meetings, and how I enjoy it because it is boring. (8/10)
Department at MIT: Computer Science and Media Arts (7/10)
Trait Most Proud Of: Calmness? Maturity? I’m not sure how to describe this essay, but it is pretty meta and I liked it a lot (9/10)
World You Come From: I talked about the Universe, and how small we are inside it. This one is REALLY meta and it’s my favorite essay I’ve ever written (10/10)
Significant Challenge: Not comfortable sharing about this one here, I think it was well written. A bit of a sob story (even though I wrote really candidly), so I don’t like that I used it in my college apps… (9/10)

Reflection
Strengths: Essays, Supplement, Research Awards
Weaknesses: I didn’t talk about passion for STEM at all, I talked about passion for art mostly haha… which is why I was surprised I got in…

Essays:
What You Do For Pleasure: Nail polish, 9
Department at MIT: Course 10 (Chemical Engineering), and also talked about Sloan Business, 10
Trait Most Proud Of: Feistiness, 9, it was kind of corny but I think my metaphors worked since I got in
World You Come From: Hard to explain… it was about my parents being immigrants and how I never had many relatives, but I was able to fill the holes with people in my community, 9.
Significant Challenge: Accepting to attend my highschool, it’s a STEM and IB school, 10. By far my favorite essay
Additional Essay/QB Essays: N/A
Other (teacher’s subject, 1-10 rating, details):

Teacher Recommendation #1: English Teacher, 10. I call her mom, and she calls me her daughter … Nonetheless her recommendation for me was really stellar!
Teacher Recommendation #2: Math Teacher, didn’t read. I was one of her favorites though so I’d suspect at least an 8
Counselor Rec: Didn’t read, but we’re tight so probably 8-9.
Additional Info/Rec: Youth Group Teacher, didn’t read but I’ve read recommendations that she’s written for me for scholarships so probably a 10.
Interview: Awesome, mine lasted 3 hours and we really connected. My interviewer said I was probably the most social one she’s met thus far (and she had met 23 others before me).
Art Supplement: 10 pictures of my nail art (I have been featured on a magazine and famous nail instagrams, but I’m not a professional)

Other
Date Submitted App: 10/18
U.S. State/Territory or Country: Pennsylvania
School Type: Public
Ethnicity: Asian, specifically Korean
Gender: Female
Income Bracket Range: Upper/Middle Class
Hooks (URM, first generation, recruited athelete, development): None

Reflection
Strengths: definitely my essays, I spent over 4 months on every single prompt and had over 15 people edit/comment on them (no, i did not pay a professional to read them. just got my teachers, parents friends, and my friends to read them). My interview was great, and I had a lot of leadership positions throughout my highschool career.
Weaknesses: No crazy awards like Intel or Siemens. I only competed in one international event, but that was Model UN so not as impressive as a science international competition. Additionally, I’ve only dabbled in research and didn’t have the chance to go into a full indepth research of my own.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Not really sure why I was accepted … maybe a combination of my essays and recommendations? I think I chose the right people for my recommendations, as I had established really close ties with my guidance counselor and teachers earlier on.
What would you have done differently?: Probably tried harder in Science Olympiad to reach something beyond state level, looked for more research opportunities, and joined more clubs my freshman year.
Where else did you apply? Penn State Main (safety, accepted), Penn State Schreyers Honors College, Harvard

**Other Factors: **

General Comments & Advice: Don’t get hung up on your scores, a 2400 vs. a 2300 isn’t something to stress over as it won’t be the deciding factor between you and another student. Work hard on your essays. When people say that the essays have the most weight, I 100% back that. Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t find myself particularly spectacular, so I definitely feel as though my essays and teacher recs got me accepted. Also, rack up those leadership positions earlier on!! Good luck to all regular applicants, hope to see some of you there at CPW!
