CONGRATULATIONS @Jellybae
Congrats Jellybae! I’m still getting the database error.
Anyone figure out how to get past this database connection error?
@stb2121 I have no idea i just kept refreshing and then it was there
Congrats to all those admitted!
Good luck to all waitlisted.
Commiserations to all those turned down.
rejected
There is a result only thread that is underpopulated at the moment.
It includes someone who said they didn’t get in because of “affirmative action” and they list being Asian. I was interested in whether this could be true.
http://mitadmissions.org/apply/process/profile
Important parts:
91% US citizen or permanent resident (!)
of those:
51% White/Caucasian
30% Asian
14% Hispanic/Latino
11% Black/African-American
9% International (no country split, but 53 countries represented)
Oh, and Harvard has only 20% Asians admitted, so MIT is taking 10% more.
Lol Anyone rejected/wait listed looking forward to Georgia Tech decisions today?
Finally! Rejected! 2nd year in a row.
@rhandco You can see the enrollment by country here: http://web.mit.edu/registrar/stats/geo/index.html
The high percentage of US citizens/permanent residents and low percentage of international admits is set by offices at MIT higher up than the admissions office – the admissions office is very clear that there’s an international quota, which is part of what allows MIT to be need-blind for both domestic and international students.
@dhruv97 yeah man! Hopefully it offesets the rejections haha
Interesting @molliebatmit, for Undergrad, twice as many Chinese students as Indian, and more Korean than Indian. A lot of Thai. Many more international graduate students than undergraduates, same trend at my college.
Of course they aren’t showing acceptance rates for each country, just actual students. I would think that once the FA is taken into consideration, the cost of attending MIT might related to how many students actually attend. China’s middle and upper middle class is exploding as compared to India, from what I have read lately.
I had a fellow grad student from India who was brahmin and merchant class by background, English as a first language and excellent education, and he had to live in our offices for six months because he could not afford an apartment after his lease ran out on a previous inexpensive place. (we only found out when he was “moving out” of the offices that he was living where his desk was).
On a US basis, by far more students from California than other states. Are they trying to “take” students from Cal Tech?
Son was denied. Caucasian male, 2320 SAT, 34 ACT, 3.6 UW, 3.86 W, Eagle Scout, 5 Varsity sports, NHS, Academic Team, 9 APs, military brat. Weakness in GPA, some AP and SAT II scores for Physics, Calc.
Congratulations to everyone selected, and all of you that were in the running. You couldn’t have gotten to the point of applying without being amazing already. Good luck with the rest of your decisions!
Dear Stuart Schmill
Thank you for your letter of rejection. After careful consideration, I regret to inform you that I am unable to accept your refusal to offer me a spot at MIT’s class of 2019.
This year, I have been particularly fortunate in receiving an unusually large number of rejection letters. With such a varied and promising field of universities, it is impossible for me to accept all refusals.
Despite your outstanding qualifications from previous experience in rejecting applicants, I find that your rejection does not meet with my needs at this time. Therefore I will initiate my studies at MIT immediately.
I look forward to seeing you then. Best of luck in rejecting future candidates.
Sincerely,
A rejectee.
LOL, @elyvine, that’s hysterical. I’m sorry you got rejected.
@elyvine exactly what I want to say to princeton haha and I’m glad I’m in good company not getting into MIT
There was a person on the MIT results thread that got accepted with an 1840 SAT while almost everybody with 2200+ SATs were getting rejected. That’s got to sting.
I think this is a great answer:
“We often say we don’t admit numbers to MIT, we admit people. Yet this isn’t quite true either: we admit classes, cohorts which have been curated with care, each contributor collected to create the best possible team to climb the mountain that is MIT.”
@albert69 – Oh well. It stings, but MIT can admit whomever they want, I guess. I won’t pretend to figure it out.
@albert69 I found that entry a little “fishy.”
Didn’t you notice that that was this person’s first posting?
I find spectacular first posting a little bit off, especially at the of an entire college career and application season.
I almost bought into it, but there is something about that post …
