too scary
Mom of MIT Class of 2020 student here. I know exactly how you all are feeling. Although my son loves MIT, he was accepted to a lot of fantastic schools so please have faith that you will end up at the perfect school for you! Best of luck and keep a sense of humor about this insane process…Peace!
I am so so nervous- friends telling me that they’re sure I’m going to get in really isn’t helping!
I don’t think anything has cheered me up more than finding this gem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQwQqJwWpW4. You’re welcome…
@yuiichiiros that’s horrifying. wow.
!!! good luck from Yale SCEA!!! You’re incredibly dedicated people; be happy about all you’ve accomplished!

@115701242017 Yeah I guess? I think some other people here did mention that they were applying regular too.
@vik0likes0cs did they apply regular this year or last year?
From Dartmouth forum. Good luck everyone! Hope we can be grateful on Thursday all together!
14 hours to go…
ahh! the anticipation is killing me
I am so anxious already, and I’m going to be in class when they come out…
My advice to MIT EA applicants:
Be in a private place when you logon to learn about your admission decision. Because of the time that decisions are released (6:28 PM EST) you may still be at your high school (classes just let out, doing HW, sports, etc.) Resist the temptation to find out while you are surrounded by hovering classmates, all of whom will, of course, be absolutely convinced that you will “get in.” This happened to my kid, and when he was deferred, the let down around him was palpable and his classmates didn’t really know how to console him.
His story ended well. He was admitted in the RD round. So, that too is a good “take away” from his experience. Don’t despair if you are deferred. Many kids that are deferred to the RD round are ultimately accepted. And, if you are deferred, keep on doing amazing things, all of which you can report about in your formal update to the admissions committee, before the RD process begins. That helps, imo.
The EA admit rate at MIT is brutal compared to the admit rates at schools that practice ED. There is only a very small “bump” for EA at MIT, rather than the huge advantage that you can get with the ED admission practice. But I’m sure that you all already know that.
Good luck to everybody!
Thanks! However, it seems as if they will defer a lot of applicants as usual! Also, suppose one gets deferred, does he/she get to update their application information like activities or achievements etc.
I think so! Pretty sure that’s what the February forms are for.
For the last EA admission cycle:
http://mitadmissions.org/apply/process/stats
7.8% were admitted
70.9% were deferred
Yes, if you are deferred to the RD round, you MUST submit the February Updates and Notes Form:
http://mitadmissions.org/apply/freshman/midyear
“The February Updates & Notes Form also includes an opportunity for you to update us on anything important that has occurred since you submitted your application. Using the February Updates & Notes Form for such updates is preferred over mailed updates.”
My kid used this form to report about new accomplishments in his sport, a research internship that he was accepted to and would complete before graduation, new awards that he won, a research paper that he wrote, and a presentation that he made at a science symposium held after his EA application was submitted.
So, as I said in #213, stay busy and you might have new accomplishments that enhance your application during the RD cycle. Do your best to stand out in the deferred pool. You still have a shot.
Thanks @whatisyourquest, this year the admission rate might be lower than 7% as per the information provided by @yuiichiiros
Sure, I was just quoting what we know from last year.
can confirm
@MITChris confirm what? The number of applicants this year?
