MIT is need based. I don’t think they have merit based scholarship.
If MIT offered merit aid everyone accepted would qualify!
Does MIT post their Class 2022 stats? Like how many accepted are White, Asian, Black, Hispanic, LGBTQ, lower income class, etc, etc?
has a girl got in MIT around here. has no impressive stats in terms of grades and all. But she is Hispanic. Also have a few whites and asians and indians with super cometitive grades and test scores and all that activities. all got rejected. I guess race is super important…
@doomedasian or maybe she just had an incredible story, background, and experience that you are unaware of. MIT is trying to solve the world’s problems and in order to do that, they need people from all over the world with diverse experiences to provide their input and knowledge. Having the same MUN, tennis playing, perfect ACT score student 1,500 times doesn’t provide you with the wide view you need to have a global understanding as a university. Just because you want to mark yourself as a “doomed asian”, don’t discredit anyone else’s acceptance because of their race. One of the greatest schools in the world obviously thought she was an exceptional individual compared to 20,000 other incredible students, so that just count for something other than the fact she checked the “hispanic” box on her application.
@LondonVall Couldn’t agree more
D was accepted last year and we didn’t fill out any FA forms prior to admissions. I was told that we could still apply, but with no guarantee that results would be available by the time of attendance. D did negotiate with U Chicago (EA) with MIT. Believe or not, MIT is actually pretty cheap full pay school. U Chicago gave her additional annual $15k scholarship so that her COA there is cheaper than that of MIT. FYI. While MIT doesn’t offer merit scholarship, there are schools that do. Through admitted parents FB, I realized that there are kids who do ROTC at MIT!
Best of luck, everyone!
@Holistic2 Lol!! Son was accepted by Caltech but not MIT.
@C&KsMom, Likewise, DD got into Caltech EA but Deferred and then Rejected at MIT. Columbia has been enticing her with Science Research Fellow carrot (likely). When one door closes, another opens - sometimes the other door was already open before the one closes… Good luck to your son - Loved Caltech campus and the ambiance (geeky like MIT but a lot quieter and lot less foot and automobile traffic). Easy to find parking and probably don’t need to worry about shoveling the snow. Class sizes will be in the low double digits! Just need to get used to the in-your-face orange!!
Thanks, @Holistic2 ! Son participated in MIT MOSTEC, applied EA, deferred, then rejected. I have not visited MIT or Caltech, but will go to Caltech’s admitted students weekend next month. Best wishes to your DD and to everyone waiting on other college decisions. You will shine, thrive and succeed whenever you end up
@amazingjourney I suggest you spend some time on the MIT website. They are very transparent about what they are looking for.
Financial Aid Awards are coming out…check MyMIT
DD got a letter stating we are not eligible to receive any need-based merit…2018-2019 cost is $70,440!!!
MODERATOR’S NOTE:
There is one thread to discuss race and college admissions:
http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/faqs-on-college-confidential/2021871-how-can-i-message-another-member.html#latest
How a thread on MIT applications got sidetracked is beyond me; several posts deleted.
Does MIT mail out acceptance letters?
@E4tHam I think every college does that after they post the decisions online. MIT decisiosn should have come out a couple days ago on the 14th.
They mail out a special acceptance “package” in a silver tube in 1-2 weeks!
Okay so now I think the most upsetting part about getting rejected is the fact that I don’t get a silver tube… like genuinely upset about that. That sounds like the coolest acceptance letter ever
Hey guys have any waitlisted students received the confirmation form?
nope
@manchesternashik It actually came today at 1:01PM ET.
