What triggered the Admissions reach out – were the scores not on the application?
They said the scores were missing which was weird because the Calc score is at the top of the list. The WH score was not in the app because his college counselor told him to only list his STEM AP scores. Doesn’t seem like that was the best advice.
No interview here. They said it will be waived as they have way more applicants than Alums in our area. Anyone else?
Why does proximity to the applicant matter? My students interview was by Zoom from 90 minutes away. Would have been the same if it was 3K miles away.
Same here. Applicant outside the US, and no interview email yet.
Admissions said if you don’t get EC email, nothing to worry as it won’t affect their decision.
My daughter did not get an interview and was accepted to MIT. She’s a student there now.
Is it kosher to not send AP scores to MIT? My DD had a couple 3’s and my advice was to not send them, but she said that for each AP class there was a checkbox, something like “did you take the AP test for this class” and if you checked “yes”, you had to enter your score. So the only way to not send an AP score is to say that you didn’t take the AP test for that particular AP class. She wasn’t comfortable doing that as it felt like lying and so sent all her scores.
Your D made the right decision, as that would have been lying. The colleges do not reject people over a couple of less-than-4/5 scores–interesting that MIT requests the info like that.
MIT has a very challenging General Institute Requirements curriculum that all students must take. And they have a lot of data on what it takes to complete the curriculum and continue with your studies.
Oh I know! Toured etc–D is applying RD. I just haven’t seen the app so I didn’t know they asked for AP scores in that way, but I am not surprised considering the info session from the Dean.
My D also mentioned it. Her application is now flagged for financial verification . Anyone have this experience…
I just wish they’d be more direct about it on their website, before students get to their application. My D didn’t take every test for each AP class she had because they are expensive and she’s got siblings that were either taking them too, or in college. On reddit there was a thread about it, and the MIT rep said if students didn’t take all the tests for financial reasons, they would want that stated in the additional info box.
I don’t love that because I thought AP tests were optional, and many schools my D is applying for don’t even give much credit at all for them. She’ll have taken a total of 9 tests, vs her 14 AP classes, but it did not occur to her to explain on her application that the extra $600 was an expense our family didn’t see was justified.
Where exactly does it say that?
My D is at MIT now and I don’t believe she submitted any AP scores.
@citivas @DickWhitman curious how MIT identified the missing AP (WH). If you didnt send it and you didnt plan on sending it in - which is common and many students do this, how would they know? Did they pull - why would they do that for every student? Concerned to say the least
Could be from transcript if the class was taken.
I have no specific knowledge but agree with @privatems that they easily could see if the class was taken from a transcript and wonder if there was no corresponding test score reported. Their app did specifically ask students to report all their test scores and even asked them to get into the weeds on the half-a-dozen sub-scores on the SAT and ACT reports.
Exactly. There’s a presumption that the student took the AP tests that correspond to AP classes in the transcript. If they ask for the scores (and they are pretty clear they want them) and the student didn’t take them, just say so. Otherwise report the scores.

My son checked that he took the exam. As mentioned above, you could check no but that would be lying. I also read on Reddit they would ask about not taking an AP exam. So he followed the advice of his counselor on not self reporting and they caught it. At least they also thought he didn’t include a 5 on Calc BC so it looks like a simple mistake.
Also some schools have a strict rule that if a AP Class is taken as part of school course then they have to take the test and it is stated in school report sent to colleges. Our school have this rule.
