Maybe MIT will want to bring in more music majors?
“Preparation for the construction of MIT’s new Music Building began in June and took place during the summer. According to the Capital Projects website, the building has a target completion date of 2024 .”
I think you are well qualified to be a contender.
May luck be on your side.
MIT has very clearly stated that they only use SATs to establish baseline competency—and that score is much lower than most people think. Of course, people who get into MIT tend to also have SAT math scores much higher than that baseline…but a 770 on each section is far from an auto-reject.
Yes, thank you. Just because people reporting their scores the last few optional years have 780-800 in math does not mean MIT requires that. In fact, they’ve made that really clear in their admissions blogs.
This student definitely has a shot. But the numbers are very discouraging, and no one here can give you an estimate anyway. Too many factors go into who ends up in an MIT class.
You’ve got a shot of course. numbers are fine and EC’s are great. So you’re qualified and will be in the mix. The main thing that’s missing is a demonstrated passion for STEM as it’s not really part of your EC’s. If you were able to illustrate that in your essays it would help a whole lot.
To be fair, MIT has had those sorts of numbers for years…kids who get in also tend to have 780+, very often an 800 on the SAT.
But that is correlation…there are definitely kids with lower (but still excellent!) scores who get in and many, many kids with perfect scores who don’t, of course.
Thanks for the help everyone! I applied as a prospective Biology major but I definitely tried bridging my loves for science and music. I talked about innovation and problem-solving and how I find similarities within creating dental implants through dental research as well as creating music to inspire others. I think my essays were somewhat strong.
My SAT is a 1530, which I know is definitely on the lower side. I’m just hoping that I was able to demonstrate the culminating point of my diverse interests. I also talked about food a lot during my interview, and I think it went really well.
Usually MIT admissions will make an announcement on Monday through their blog, and then EA decision release on Saturday. That is what happened last year. So I would imagine this year would be 12/12 and 12/17 respectively.
Saw the email to my son @ 12/17 12:17. Very tense…Son has decent quals (Valedictorian, perfect ACT, 1570 -800+770 SAT, MOP, MIT Primes, 10+ APs with 5 and Pres. of school and state MAO, NMSF)…fingers crossed.
My son attended a math program at MIT this past summer and during it they met with admissions and got advice on the application process. He said that the admissions people told them to submit all AP scores. Any scores left out are assumed to be non-passing scores. So if a student decides to not submit a 3, the assumption is that the student didn’t pass if the score is missing. This was something my son was considering doing bc he has a 3 on one of his APs and wasn’t sure if he should include it. It was in a humanities course so he didn’t think it would be missed. After hearing what admissions said, he submitted it.
