MIT Essay 12b : MIT Major

How should I write my MIT essay 12b about: which department or program at MIT appeals to you and why?

I know specifically what I want to major in; how technical should my essay be? Should I write it the way RSI essays about the area you want and 3 interesting implication/3 problems you see in that area are written? To what degree should it be about my experiences?

Honestly, let them know simply what interests you. Think of that box as providing a background for the rest of your accomplishments, or the very least, a frame to bring it together.

If you want to write a technical essay, knock yourself out. Being knowledgable and informed about science is not usually a detriment in the MIT admissions process. ;)

Personally, I think it would be way more interesting to write about some problems in the field that capture your interest than saying "I've been interested in chemistry since I was five and my mom bought me a chemistry set" like everybody else.

Hey mollie, that was MY idea! Kidding kidding.

Yeah it's hard to make your answer to that question unique...

But then again it's only 100 words...how much can you say?!

or you could answer the question straight and say which department you like, and why its special or why it interests you?

When all else fails, just answer the question.

Special tip: do tell what you dep't you want to study in, do not tell what you want to be when you're graduated.
