Mit Essay Topic - 2006

Hey guys, I was just wondering if MIT keeps the essay topic the same or do they change it every year? If they do change it, any idea when they will put up the application at MyMIT?

as i recall, there's more than one "essay", or at least, more than one "prompt/question to be answered with some significant chunk of written thought". i don't remember mit's essays being highly distinctive from most schools' (ie, not like u-chicago's :) so you can probably expect something about a passion of yours, a situation in which you faced disappointment or adversity, and possibly why you want to come to mit. they may've changed these, however, or they may not have all of these, and there may be one topic i'm missing. you'll probably run into similar questions on other applications, so even if i'm wrong it's probably not wasted time to at least think about them. though i must say, you're getting a rather early start on things.

true...but lot of my senior friends keep telling me to start early and well since I'm going to India for half this vacation....plus applying early to MIT...I should prolly try and get this stuff done ASAP.

thanks for the advice though =)

Nah, it's a good idea to get stuff done early. When all your friends are freaking out at the end of November, you can kick back and relax.

I'm applying to grad school for 2006, so I'm getting application stuff done this summer too.

awesome...thanks for the ecouragement =)

yes merudh you should get your essays organised over the summer. Atleast have a good outline/idea abt what you want to say in them, and jus be urself! honestly, my essays were nuthin but my heart on paper, n well, my SATs werent dat great, but hey, they got me into MIT!!
so dont underestimate the importance of ur essays!!! :)

dont be THAT modest laila :p 1500 is great.

haha merc, MIT never got my 1500!!! coz i never sent it lol
they only hav a 1410 on record ;)

lol I have a 1500 =)...and I will definately put my heart into my paper, because MIT is an amazing place.

Goodluck!!
n do lemme know if i can b of any help :)

what's your sn?

and oh yeah, i was wondering if MIT accepts SAT scores for Early Action from the November 2005 test date (I heard they do, but just need to make sure) thanks

You note on another thread that you found the answer but just for assurances, the MIT admissions website states (emphasis mine), about Early Action:
If you have taken all the required standardized tests on or by the November test date and postmark all of the application materials by November 1, you may ask that we review your application and notify you of admission by mid-December.
Should be fine as long as all the other materials are submitted before Nov. 1 -- which will be before the Nov. SAT test date.

We do change the topics from time to time, but not every year. This year's topics will be the same as last year's.

Hello Mr. Ben Jones,
I see that you are an adcomm at MIT.I have a lot of queries regarding the school is it okay and do you have the time to chat via yahoo messenger sometime.
I live in India and will be applying for fall 2006.
Thanks

i have this odd theory, they'll reject the borderline 1500's and accept the 1580-1600 group i don't know, crackpot theory i made after i saw the columbia decisions haha

Hi Vampiro,

I prefer email, the blogs, or this site if you don't mind. But please do send me your questions!

LOL, don't put so much emphasis on scores - we don't. People with perfect grades and scores who have nothing else going on hardly ever get accepted. People with 1500's who are engaged and passionate get in much more frequently.

I am proud to say that I never broke 1500 on the SAT but will be going to MIT in the fall anyway. Hmmm I think that should be a facebook group....

=)

(For those of you who don't use the facebook, the groups on it are...ridiculously random.)

whoops... forgot to mention my second half of the theory... lol... but basically if you're a really high scorer or a moderately high score you get accepted... no basis whatsoever haha

This theory did not hold with all the students I know who applied this past year, and a check of some of the admission results threads on this board from springtime will also show that it isn't a good theory.
