I'm assuming most of you are aware that the MITES application comes out in just a couple of days or a few weeks. Therefore I decided it would be a good idea to start a thread solely for us applicants. We can ask each other questions and worry about admission together! Let the fun begin!

can’t wait to apply!

Hi,
I’m an alumni of the E2@MIT summer program(students are automatically considered for E2, MITES, and MOSTEC by applying to MITES) and am familiar with the entire app process as well as the program itself, and am willing to read essays and give advice!

@ AmaranthineD

Can you explain the process of the app? This sounds like such an awesome program.

OrangeMaple-

Yes! It is awesome!

This is the website: index
When the application is available, there will be a link on the website to the online application. This includes 5~6 short answer essay questions, self reported coursework, and self reported test scores. There also needs to be a recommendation from a guidance counselor, science teacher, and math teacher. You enter their emails into the form and MITES emails them directly with the form to fill out. The guidance counselor form will also request a transcript(WITH first quarter/first semester grades) and a copy of your PSAT scores(I believe you can submit SAT and ACT as well, but I’m not sure how to send those). You submit your application and can see a checklist to make sure all your teachers submit theirs. Then you buckle down and wait for April!

AmaranthineD:

Thanks so much! I’m wondering, on their website they said they are targeting minority groups. Does being a girl count as a minority here?

I’m going to say yes, but only slightly. At E2 it was split pretty evenly with a couple more on the girls’ side, and I could swear that it would be the same for MITES as well. Since you’re asking this question, I assume that you are white or Asian. There were exactly four Asians(including me) and three white people. So although it is difficult to get in as a non-under-represented-minority, it is not impossible and I encourage you to apply!

The main groups they target are Pacific Islander, Hispanic, African-American/Black, American Indian, low income, and first-generation students. Most E2ers were more than one. I believe I was the only E2er who was none of the above. My “hook” was probably being from an online charter school(although others from my school applied too, hmm. It is kind of random.)

One thing we all had in common was an incredibly interesting story. I felt like my background was the most boring of everybody’s. So definitely be open and honest about your own personal obstacles and challenges in your application.

So basically the essay and the recs are the most important part of the application then right? It looks like they are not exactly focusing on grades.

What draws you to that conclusion? Just like in college apps, most applicants have similar grades/scores so essays/recs are what serve to set you apart. You definitely need to have competitive grades though!

What I meant is that are the essays and recs weighted more? Because i assumed that good grades is a given.

When is the application going to come out? I can’t wait. The program sounds awesome.

@OrangeMaple–oh, so we’re in agreement! Yeah, most students have similar grades, they’re still important to the app though!

@Amaruchi–Should be soon!

What grades are considered competitive… =(

At E2, I’ve never met so many valedictorians in my life and I imagine it’s similar for MITEs as well. Many kids had straight As, some didn’t. Keep in mind that these programs are aimed toward minority kids who have already exhausted the boundaries of their high school and taken full advantage of it, and these kids will usually have the grades to show it. Don’t let insecurity about grades keep you from applying!

If I get 2 B’s this semester - both in AP classes - will my chances be ruined? I’ve gotten straight A’s and one B before this semester which kinda sucks

They won’t throw your app away just because of those Bs! Are they in math/science APs? Don’t let it discourage you from applying, there are definitely people with a few Bs.

So they are asking for people who have exhausted their high school’s resources? What if I’m taking AP comp Sci this year ?

XD

I must have phrased things rather badly…I meant people that took advantage of the opportunities at their high school and could really take advantage of the extra enrichment and hard work at MITES. By taking AP Computer Science, you’re definitely demonstrating that! I wouldn’t be worried.

Hey guys! My friend wants to apply to but she’s has a C+ in a class…what are her chances? =/

Is it a science/math class? She should still apply! It is competitive for everyone!
