Hey Guys,
My friend just got accepted to MIT a couple of weeks ago and she is a little bit unsure about whether she thinks MIT is a good fit for her. The main thing she is worried about is the social scene that is present at MIT, as she is a very sociable person. So, what shes really wondering about is how the parties are like and what people do in their free/down time and whether it ever really gets boring because there is not much to do. I know this is kinda broad, but any input will be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks!!!

If I get into MIT, I can be her boyfriend. I’m 100% serious by the way. I don’t even need a picture or any info about her. I’m very smooth, I know.
To answer your question, MIT is like any college in terms of social life. Same parties, same things on people’s free time. You can read on the MIT blogs if you’re interested.
And I wasn’t joking about the boyfriend part, by the way. ^_^.

Different people and different groups of friends do different things. My group of friends was pretty low-key – you’d most likely find us hanging out in the dorm’s floor lounge in our free time, eating together, talking, and watching TV. Sometimes we’d rent a movie and order pizza, sometimes we’d go into Boston to go shopping, sometimes we’d go out to a restaurant.

MIT is many things, but it’s basically never boring. There’s always something to do. Actually, most people have the opposite problem – there are always too many things to do.

There are lots of different kinds of parties, too. MIT has a pretty vibrant Greek scene, if that’s what she’s into.

What does your friend want in a social experience, specifically?

MIT isn’t a place full of introverted nerds, if that’s what she wants to know. I know that from talking to my interview EC, bunch of current students, and just good ol’ mitadmissions.org blogs.

^Well, I mean, let’s not get carried away – MIT is absolutely a place full of introverted nerds, especially when the comparative population is the rest of the world. I myself happily wear that label.

But “introverted” doesn’t mean “antisocial”, and not everybody at MIT is either introverted or nerdy. I agree that there’s no inherent problem in being “sociable”, as the OP says, and coming to MIT.

In fact, if you look at the results of MIT’s stress survey, ([The Tech - Pressure Survey](http://tech.mit.edu/V132/N59/pressure/breakdown/index.htm)) you’ll find that most people at MIT identify as introverts. This is opposed to the general population where the opposite is the case.

Thanks so much everyone!! This has been really helpful for her! She has one more question tho.
She wants a social experience where she can go out on the weekends and drink and party and meet people (possibly like her). shes not nerdy (not the type thats into doctor who,etc ) and she wants the classic college experience of partying. will she get this at mit? she also wants to interact with people who are not as nerdy as the mit stereotype.

@undefined123: hahaha maybe if u get in

@RCLVRR Yes of course she’ll get this - MIT like every college has parties and people meet people on weekends. Plus not all people who get into MIT are ‘nerdy,’ and don’t forget that there are other schools in the area. Harvard isn’t far away.

Yes, she can. Has she considered joining a sorority? She will probably find the most like-minded people in the Greek scene, whether in a sorority or as a friend of a fraternity house.

I would really encourage her to come to Campus Preview Weekend in the spring, so she can meet people at MIT for herself and see if there’s a social scene that she finds herself fitting into.

Yeah, the answer is CPW.

I hear there’s a lot of food.

By all means, attend CPW.

Boston/Cambridge area has a lot of things to do with all the various colleges located there. You may want to spend some time looking at the area beyond just the MIT campus is you are not familiar with the area.

CPW is Campus Preview Weekend, the MIT admitted students weekend in the spring.
