hey everyone, i need some advice about my chances of getting into ivy league (esp. MIT and Stanford)..and also Duke, Rice, UC systems..my safety is UT Austin..

Male, Indian, live in Texas...lol..

9th and 10th grade went to Marcus High (Texas)

-Rank: 2/760
-Sophomore PSAT: 206/240

Classes: AP World Hist, AP Calc A/B and B/C, 2 semesters of foreign language, bio, chem, phys, two semesters of eng

-academic decathlon awards up to the texas state level

Then after 9th and 10th, I went to the Texas Academy for Math and Science (TAMS). This is a program where you complete your last two years of high school by doing university courses at the University of North Texas..and thereby getting college credit:

GPA: 3.75/4.0
no rank
Junior PSAT: 219/240 (hopefully national merit scholar)

Was awarded a TAMS Scholarship ($4000) to continue research over this summer.
2. Continuation from previous summer at UT Southwestern Med Ctr, also in another genetics lab: review paper being published next month.

Thanks a bunch, I really appreciate it :)

MIT and Stanford are not in the Ivy League.

Your academic stats are definitely impressive. Try to get your SAT critical reading into the 700s. I think you have the stats that are indicative of an Ivy League, MIT, Stanford or Duke prospect. However, you are 1 of many-those schools tend to be reaches for even the best students. Make sure your essays exude passion. It could very well set you apart from the pack.

Also, take advantage of alumni interviews. Maintain your level of excellence, and I think you will get into a top-tier school.

oh yeah, stanford and MIT not in the ivy league, but of that caliber. thanx majayiduke09..i'll try gettin the crit reading in the 700s..just never seems to go everytime i test..haha

anyone else??..please?..

also..where do y'all think i should apply early?..any other tips are most welcome

About as good as anyone applying there--around 10-15%

...bump...

dude, get real.
u will not make nms...pull-eeze!!!
a 219!!??! what have u been smoking, duder??!?

What do you need to make national merit? Anyways I think Stanford and MIT (Standford moreso than MIT because MIT values math scores more) are reaches due to your reading score and your grades are pretty average. You should still apply though because your SAT scores ends up being pretty decent. Btw, interesting ecs...I've only heard of about 1/3 of them =P

bump............

he can get NMS. the cutoff varies by state. some people can get it with a 208 score, others don't with 220+ scores.

you have a chance, but so do thousands of others. write good essays, take the interviews seriously, and hope for luck.

not to hijack thread, but where/who do i talk to to get an opportunity to do some research and be published?

You are a reasonable candidate at MIT and Stanford, but in all honesty, they have their pick of top Indian students and many will have better SATs. You would be a shoo in at any top school that doesn't have a huge number of Asian applicants.

i live on college campus at UNT...so I am working in a lab there. if u want get into research, just look at colleges (i guess near you cuz that wud be the easiest to get to), look at their different departments that youre interested in..and email some of the professors you're interested in after reading about their work. After that its just how hard you work on your project and how...nice or providing.. for lack of another word...your prof is to let you get published and all

bump...what would be good matches for premed?

hey could anyone give me a run down on safeties/matches/reaches for these schools with my stats:

stanford
mit
duke
rice
UT Austin
UCLA
UCSD
UC Berkeley
Wash U (st.louis)
johns hopkins
Northwestern

Why would you go to a UC school if you are in Texas? That's a huge waste of money if I ever saw one, especially if you are competitive for Plan II

Man, I wish there was a math and science academy as awesome as Texas' over here (Michigan). GJ on your research, you might wanna try Siemens, Intel, and other research-type competitions as well. gl

bump...anyone about the safety/match/reaches?..my biggest concern with my stats right now is the SAT score and my TAMS GPA (3.75!)..they both suck,,anything i can do to improve chances? thanks :)

bump..already kicked to the next page..argh...please, i need your help! thanks
