(The deadline for applying to transfer for Fall of 2018 is March 15th.)
Anyone else planning on applying to transfer to MIT? If so what are your stats? What’s your story?
Here are my stats:
College: California Community College
Major: Economics
GPA: 4.0 (on-track)
ECs: President of Business Club, member of Honors Club, member of Phi Theta Kappa, member of Terra club (pro-environment), internship at data logistics company, began a poker coaching business; where I coach people 1-on-1
SAT: 1440 (retaking - shooting for 1500+)
Even thought MIT claims it doesn’t do legacy, I think it’s still relevant that my father attended MIT.
That might put a little extra weight on my app.
Hey there! MIT is also on my radar, it’s one of the reaches on my list.
You’re doing great in college, keep it up How many credits will you have by the time you apply? Also check out the next SATII subject tests dates because you’ll need two of those, with one being a Math subject test.
Hey, this is my story
So I’m an international freshman at NYIT, a semi-decent school, I guess. And after really thinking about it, I realized I could definitely go to a better school, and why not, even an Ivy league.
Stats
Major:
Electrical and Computer Engineering
SAT
1250 (should really retake it, took at the beginning of junior year, and still then I could have done better)
Math 670
HS GPA: 3.8
Toefl= 96(Took it in junior year, my English is 1000x better now, so I expect to get a 120 when I retake it)
College GPA: don´t know yet, it seems it will be about 3.7, maybe a little higher
ECs= Ran my own business, have 20k followers on a facebook page, IEEExtreme: placed first in the North East US region, music band produced legit independent movies, micromouse competition(yet to participate, hopefully, I place high, I think there should be an MIT team in that competition). I have a lot of little projects here and there, like web pages, and bots, I’m not really sure how to include them
Minority, so probably affirmative action stuff.
I could make a case of how I have undergone a personal transformation recently(had serious behavior issues in the past), I guess that’s good for Essays.
Languages: Chinese and Spanish totally fluently.
Would really appreciate if you guys could tell me if it is reasonable to apply to MIT/any Ivy league, and if not where I should be looking at.
Just remember that the only thing harder than getting into MIT as a freshman is to get into MIT as a transfer. In 2016/17, they only accepted 27 students for an acceptance rate of 4.7%
Honestly, I don’t know if I want to try for MIT or not, but I’m interested in hearing what you guys think I should do.
Stats:
Major: Economics(BA)
ACT: 33
HS GPA: 3.4
CC GPA: 4.0(On track for)
ECS: Assistant Coach at my HS Speech and Debate team, Volunteer for my Speech and Debate team at my CC, Interning at a pretty famous law firm, Member of some clubs, Having my philosophy paper considered for publication at Cornell and a couple other places, teaching some elementary kids in the local Math Olympiad Team.
Seriously interested in hearing what you guys think. And I’ll help y’all out too if you need me too.
@AGoodFloridian
Thanks for the encouragement. I’ll sign up for the Subject tests.

Fair to say that we’re all climbing an uphill battle. Whether we succeed or fail this time around, our work will pay off in some form down the line.
The story usually goes something like,
“I never heard of MIT. I was crushing everything in community college and am running out of classes to take and (developing whatever extracurriculars), and my professor told me about this school and encouraged me to apply.”
Some transfer students lose whatever classes they took (your academics have to map to MIT’s first-year academics like 18.01, 18.02, 8.01, 8.02, 5.11x, 7.01x, etc.)
There are a number of military-related people (e.g., Air Force Academy, Naval Academy, Coast Guard Academy) who transfer.
There are a small number of people from LAC’s (there’s one sophomore who went from TX to a LAC in New England and realized she wanted to do research, civil engineering, etc. and that her LAC couldn’t offer what she wanted). Of course she was on the Dean’s List of her previous college.
There are some internationals, but they tend to be um … like … outstandingly awesome. There were a pair Ukrainian women with great English skills who were like #2 and #3 in the world in girls’ mathematics olympiads. (Yeah, they also won IMO gold and silver medals.) My contact who was in the math department knew they were coming, so I’m guessing that community is pretty tight-knit.
My second roommate was a transfer student. There was one other transfer student on my floor. Both were internationals. Adjusting to (and socializing in) MIT as a transfer is another matter.
There’s a great section on CC titled “Community College Success Stories”. If you want to use a community college to help you get into a good 4-year school, it’s well worth reading.
@agapetos Can you elaborate on military academy transfers? What percentage of transfers would you estimate they make up? I’m currently at USAFA and thinking about transferring.
