Hey KingsXI you are welcome.

Admissions are like lottery. There is no sure shot formula. It is a right combination which needs to be presented effectively as well. Admission officers are human too, give them something that will catch their eye. They are good at spotting the right fit and not what everyone assumes ie. rejecting candidates. Just some numbers to put things in perspective imagine having to pick 8000 out of 42,242 applicants, that is how it was for my daughter (for a freshman class size of 4650).

Don’t stress too much. Do not stay focused on a particular college/colleges.You will be setting up yourself for heartburn and disappointment and you do not need that. Just shortlist about 10 colleges that you would like to go to, after doing extensive research on them. Do not get emotionally attached to any one of them, but be passionate about landing in any one of those. But really the key here is figuring out 10 places that you would really really like.

So maybe you need to sit down go through ranking list by US News, Bloomberg, Princeton review and shortlist colleges based on your area of study, to location, type of college- private or public, average SAT,student-faculty ratio, cost of program, length of program, number of essays required, number of recommendations required, teaching grade, job placement grade, facilities and services grade and you can keep adding the perimeters to this list. Once you have about 30 of them, (30 looks likes a huge number now), that is when the shortlisting begins. Since you are done with your exams get on with it…

I’m only worried about MIT & only another Ivy i.e Harvard cause other than these two I do know I’ll be accepted into all other colleges I’ll apply as the admissions led out by them are very much predictable.

I have checked out most of the stuff & I don’t think I’ll have any international honors etc cause all olympiads &/or fairs are specifically for high schoolers & since I’m done with high school & only 6 months rem before I apply for MIT for Fall 2012.

I am sure and pray that you get what you want.

Having a said that, this i will say this as a parent, always have a backup plan A,B and C. There is always a slip between the cup and the lip. Trust me keep you options open it will only help you stay sane and ready to face whatever comes your way. When life throws lemons at you, you should be able to turn around and say ‘I love lemonade’.

I wish you all the best. Take care.

I LOL’ed after reading this. There are more selective colleges than MIT. Good luck, buddy.

@KingsXI: Really ? Not even the very best candidates take that for granted.

@ Two above replies,

Out of my frustration :D

The other profile given on this forum (Nash’s) is an example of a typical profile accepted to MIT and similar schools (HYPS). Believe it, unless you’re full pay, you’re going to face very tough competition from people with profiles like his.
MIT accepts 300 internationals on Fin Aid. It’s need blind, but the definition’s a bit different, they have a set quota for the number of internationals they want to admit.

MIT takes like, 4 from India a year, and the other Ivies take anywhere b/w 5-20 something who are Indian nationals.
And believe it, there are more than enough people from India with really good profiles with loads of extra curriculars that go up to international/national/state level.
Esp from schools like Modern and DPS where you have like, 60 clubs and proper focus on ECs.

Ugh, I’m getting slightly tired of repeating the same thing again and again. Maybe it’s time to consolidate the info in one single thread and ‘officially’ move off CC? :S

Someone share esconie’s chance-me thread

Ok, I’m no authority on admissions and I am not pretending to be. I simply know a waitlisted MIT candidate who got rejected at all ivies and he was that kind: no good grades or anything but a passion for math. I have no business commenting on MIT or ivy admissions anyway, as I never applied to MIT and only applied to two ivies. One was my dream school, and the other(the “worst ivy”, “most lenient admissions” blah blah go figure) was the one I am probably attending. Both are pretty difficult with aid, but not so much as the LACs I applied to and wanted to go to. So I do find it frustrating when people go on and on about ivies like they are the be all and end all of US admissions, but please let’s not forget that realistically speaking, getting into Swarthmore or Wellesley with full aid, or simply just getting into Amherst or Williams is more difficult(even statistically speaking) than getting into MIT or ivies. And way way more difficult than getting into ivies minus Columbia and HYP. Of course, aid situation changes a lot at need-aware colleges.

Just my two pence after a terribly stressed admissions season.

@Pixie and the rest of '15-ers: I wonder what happened to our melodramatic farewells to CC after ivy results!! We still seem as addicted as ever. I hope college changes that! :/

Thanks all for the replies.

Though frustrated am working on my EC’s now.
I would say its my average school that mostly destroyed my EC’s as our school very rarely had any such EC except cricket & soccer.

In India, we have the holy IITs. every parent dreams of sending his/her child there. and due to the colossal population, we have an entrance examination for all the good colleges in the country. 9500 people are selected for the IITs out of 500,000 - 600,000 who appear for the exam. due to this intense competition, most parents send their children for entrance coaching. i’m enetering grade 11 and a coaching centre this year. i’m going to be in school everyday (including the weekend) from 9am to 6pm. after that, i’ll come home and probably spend the whole night studying. i wonder where ECs are going to fit in. we’ll have class even during the holidays. and i don’t even know if the school is going to have any kind of competition for grades 11 and 12. i hope you understand my problem. if i want to add an impressive string of ECs to my application, then i’ll have to wait for 1 more year after grade 12 before applying. pls help.

tom101 - You’re basically right, but the point is that that if you want to study abroad in a highly ranked university, it’s either IIT or that. You can’t expect that you’ll find the time to study 5 hours a day for the IIT, and then manage your ECs as well.

i guess you’re right. either IIT or US. but i have another question, is it good enough to get a bachelor’s degree from IIT or NIT and then do MS in a prestigious univ. in the US? will that be good enough for a decent job? i know that most people from india do MS in the US, but i really liked the US system.

is it good enough to get a bachelor’s degree from IIT or NIT and then do MS in a prestigious univ. in the US?
Yes. I can give you many examples.

Here is one:
[Chicago Booth News - Sunil Kumar Named Dean of Chicago Booth](http://www.chicagobooth.edu/news/kumar/index.aspx)

Prof. Kumar did his undergraduate study at NITK.

You don’t need to go to the U.S. for undergrad to get into good Grad schools there.

@tom101 i was at bansal for 2 years iitjee program and didnt even have my school in kota but manged some decent EC’s and after all the adcoms judge you on the opportunities you have, you can always have your guidance counselor explain your situation in your app. You must be having some ec’s in ninth and tenth? i had some good ec’s in my tenth grade. I couldnt apply to the universities because my principal was against it and refused to write recos for me but i think i had a decent shot at some good universities.

^ Just a little side note…9th and 10th grade scores and works aren’t really that important. Adcoms are much more interested on what you did your 11th and 12th grade years. Those are the most crucial years of a senior at U.S…and most of the work is done during the junior year since a lot of students pack themselves with aps. This is possibly why N0mad was declined by the principal as expansion of the ecs was needed. You don’t intend to complete uni in 4 yrs right? Cause if so, grad admissions will be highly comptetitive in top schools. Have the same mind set for HS. Remember this when you think about applying early because most of the young students usually get rejected. And why not? If adcoms have an equally smart student but with greater and matured ecs, they will usually choose this individual over the young one. These cases are exempt when you are an exceptional individual in your field of study.
There is a time for everything and it is only proper to prepare for admissions rather than rushing through the process…no matter how decent of a chance you may have.

^ no my principal was actually concerned that after going to us i’ll do drugs and sex and ruin my life, she considered me too young to be going abroad but thats another story.
