MIT

What advice will you give a Nigerian who want to apply to MIT. And please if you are a current MIT student can you tell me what SAT score got you in.

 1. In general, you need VERY good SAT score to get in, around at least, 2200+. Don't pay attention to what others have.
 2. You need high GPA, great grades in science/math classes.
 3. You must be really math/science oriented.
 4. You need really good credentials, for example, Math/science olympiad(or any notable activities), or any other activities related to science/math.

These four are not strict guidelines but it should give you some ideas.

@paul2752 is right that MIT assumes good scores and grades, but they look for more than just good numbers- and lots of people with perfect scores don’t get in.

MIT is very very helpful about what they are looking for. Read their website, especially their blogs. Here and here are two excellent places to start.

It is very difficult for internationals to get into MIT though. They only accepted 3% last year I think. You need to be absolutely outstanding :slight_smile:

@Achanya SAT scores are only one part of the application. But since MIT caps the number of international students to around 10% (I believe), and because they can now apply EA, the competition will be harder.

My superscore is a little on the low-ish side for MIT (2090); however, I’m a domestic student.

Thanks guyz, your comment was so helpful. In my state we dont have AP exams nor A-level exams, and I didn’t had much opportunity to participate in external competition but I got 3 800’s on the SAT subject test math 2, physics and chem. Will it do?

Scores are not the be all and end all for MIT. After meeting a certain criteria, its about what else you’ve done beside outstanding grades and scores.

@Achanya: you are not reading the responses. Your scores are obviously perfect- but as @lostaccount says, scores are NOT enough. Go read the links I posted earlier. They are not just words. The system is very different in the US,

Thanks guys…

I am from Tanzania. I applied to MIT in the early round this year and got in. I had a 34 in ACT, 800s in SAT2, 108 in TOEFL IBt and Unweighted GPA of 5.0. Sincerely, I had nothing outstanding in my application or any sort of hook, yet I got in. I strongly advice you to apply. You never know, you might have something they are looking for.

@Persimests58, Congratulations!

But, I have to disagree: I highly doubt that you had ‘nothing outstanding’ in your application! What seems ordinary to clearly didn’t seem ordinary to the people who read your essays and recs. MIT is clear that it’s not just scores, prizes or hooks that they are interested in.

Your scores- like the OPs- are super, but the vast majority of MIT applicants have great scores. What most of the posters are trying to say to the OP is that scores alone won’t do it. A lot of applicants think that there is a magic number that will guarantee admission, and there just isn’t. You had something to say for yourself that made you stand out to the adcomms, and the OP needs to do the same.
