MITES 2010 Information & Discussion

only have two essays left. Thank god:)

I am sooo sorry Joshtch! i clicked the link and it worked for me =/
try going on at your school or another computer.

i wrote all of my essays…but i dont think they’re great…
i feel like there is sooooooo much pressure to write the perfect essays cause that could make or break your admission…

I can’t wait to be done with my application and happy about it, although its probably going to take me some more time to make it as good as possible =]

Just wondering, are you guys all minorities?

well I’m Mexican-American.

I’m Asian and very low income.

how much commintment do you guys have outside of school in math/science? have you guys taken AIME/AMC tests, been involved in science fairs, etc?

I didn’t even know about AIME/AMC until I came on CC. Though I am involved in all the science and math EC opportunities that are available to me which is mainly Science Olympiad.

I guess I take part of any math/science related thing that’s available to me as well. I hope they take into context the extent of our situations and unique possibilities for exploration in our interests.

do regional differences play a role in the selection process?

for rsi, mites, or tasp?

i’m AA
i attend a rural HS in GA sooooo not many opportunites lol but I am competing in a science fair and I did Science Olympiad in 7th and 8th grade whe I lived up north. but i attended other math/science programs in HS.

i think regional differences play a role, before they had alot of people from TX and CA. No one attended from GA and some other midwest states according to the chart on the website

@blizzardpenguin: they divide the application reviewing by regions. That’s really about it. Usually Massachusetts, California, New York, and Texas have about 7-8 each but that’s only because that’s where the majority of applicants come from.

@ambaturkey11: We had 3 students from Georgia last year, that chart is from 2008. It really varies by year, being from a certain state doesn’t mean you won’t get in.

So, i just love how my teacher recs are horrible…:'(. I read my chemistry teacher’s rec today and it didn’t even reflect me. Like, I don’t even know, it doesn’t tell anything significant about me at all. Basically that I’m average in his class, which I’m not. And its only a couple of paragraphs long; he put no effort in it at all. I stressed how important this was to me, but I guess he doesn’t get it. Ugh, I really don’t even know if I have a chance, considering how important the teacher recs are. I never thought this would be the absolute worst part of my app. And I’ve worked sooo hard on my essays and everything. :frowning: All my teachers basically took this as a joke, because I live in a small community and no one would ever get accepted, even apply, to a program like this. Even though I’m number 1 in my class, have the highest GPA in the school, am taking online AP classes because our school doesn’t offer them, am the first person in our school to take online AP classes, maintaining all A’s, and have known this teacher personally for 15 years, and have numerous accomplishments, does he write about any of this? NO. Wow, I am really mad right now. My school is a joke.

hello everyone. I just wanted to get some input from MITES '09 of from anyone in general.

Im hispanic. Relatively low income. im not sure if that counts for anything though. I got a 197 on my PSAT (62 CR, 80 Math, and 55 W). As u can see im mainly a mathematics person. Im taking my SAT in January to see if my reading and writing scores will be higher so that I can send those as well.

I took the AMC last year and was the only person in Florida to get a perfect 150.

I have strong ECs (track and field 3 years, math clubs, won 6 math competitions, etc.) but poor essay writing skills. As i read through the forum a lot of people were saying to focus on the essays cuz they will make or break your application and that worries me.

Anyone have any advice? or comments. I’d appreciate a little input to motivate me. :)

@ambaturkey11: I came from small town GA as well!! Don’t be discouraged!
@guezmike: Your scores seem very strong, but you will have to work on essays. I would suggest having your literature teachers help you edit your writing. If you do have good essays, I think you’ll have a good chance.

@MIT15: i saw my teacher’s recc as well, it was a page long i didnt really read it just skimmed, but they will see that you are a great candidate…talk about (but not exactly the rec) how at school people dont take things seriously and how much that makes you strive…but maybe the letter was short because the teachers do need to write letters for the seniors going to college, my teacher had 10 to write! but i dont know if there alot of kids who go to college at your school…but don’t worry too much…you always have the math rec

@chrisakelly: yay! more GA people! did you go last year? and if you did do you mind outling your stats?
@guezmike: your scores are something to be proud of! i wish i had them! with your essays…just write what you truly feel…not what they want to hear…don’t think about which adjectives to use or using ten dollar words when a dollar one would suffice.

Yes, I did go last year! These are some of my stats.

  • SAT: 650 CR, 710 M, 650 W (at the time)
  • ACT: 31 (twice)
  • GPA: 4.0 UW, 4.1 W
  • Rank:6/133
  • Ap Courses: 3 (at the time)
Is their anything else you’d like to know? Btw, what school do you go to? I go to Jasper County High School.

where did the other Georgians (lol) come from?
did they say why and how they nominated you?
wow your from norther/central GA…im WAYY down south i go to Vidalia HS
how did you here about the program?
geez sorry about all the questions lol

where did the other Georgians (lol) come from?
One came from Atlanta and the other was from way up north

did they say why and how they nominated you?
Not really. One week, as a confidence booster, they told us some quotes from what our recommenders had said, so I think they consider the recommendations strongly. AS for scores, they’re looking for students who can handle the work, not the students with the top scores. A combination of your essays and scores will be your main impact I think.

wow your from norther/central GA…im WAYY down south i go to Vidalia HS
Well, I’m actually from Jasper County, not Jasper city. Jasper county is about an hour south of Atlanta and a little north of Macon. But still, you are still way south. Lol

how did you here about the program?
I heard about it through a post card. I actually almost threw it away because most summer programs I’ve been invited to cost hundreds, if not thousands of dollars, so I didn’t want to disappoint myself with another invitation. I’m glad I kept it though. :)

geez sorry about all the questions lol
No problem! That’s why I joined the discussion.

Does anyone know if we have to send in our test scores in an official manner or whether not a copy of our scores would suffice?
