two of them are opened. they didn’t update the guidance counselor one.

i apologize, you’re right, soydecali.

Alright thanks Ayantu and JBrown, I feel more comfortable applying now.

Hey, is it just me, or are there two Student Application Deadlines? Just wondering…

Would it be okay to use my IB coordinator for my counselor since she set up my schedule is is a lot involved with my schedule and grades than my actual counselor. The reason I’m asking is that my transcript has my official counselors name in giant bold letters at the top.

Gyuki47, the February deadline is for the teacher recommendations.

Whateverhappens, you should call or email MITES to get the correct answer.

cn upcoming juniors apply?

custard -

you apply to MITES during your junior year, and attend during the summer between junior/senior year.

Would it be okay to use two activities for the “Which one of your extracurricular or volunteer activities is most important to you and why?” essay?

Can white people with low income apply to MITES? And do the same people who review the MITES applications review the RSI applications? I was considering applying to both (MIT is fantastic), but won’t if it will get seen twice.

gangstergoose,

“white people” with low income can apply. anyone can apply, but the specified focus is on URMs.

Also, I think somewhere on the application you can consent that they apply your MITES application to other MIT summer programs such as RSI.

I’m guessing Asians don’t count as URMs at MIT.

Whateverhappens,

Since it says “one” I would stick with solely one. However, if you think it accents your application and can be portrayed within the 300 word maximum, then by all means go for it.

I also have a question: For the same prompt about extracurriculars/volunteering, what if that activity does not pertain to math/science but is an integral part to who the applicant is as a person? Should one avoid irrelevant activities?

wait wait wait! why are we talking about summer programs already?

Because applications open tomorrow and are due in January.

@soydecali

I wrote about Band for my extracurricular essay and it worked in my favor.

Write about what means most to you.

@godzilla
I don’t know for sure, but many past participants in MITES said there weren’t many Asians. they mean minority in the math/science/engineering field.
But anyone can apply and it doesn’t hurt your chances

@godzilla -

no, but we have accepted asian students to MITES in the past.

MITES is about providing opportunities to explore sci/engineering to students who have not had them. for a variety of complex socioeconomic reasons, URMs fall disproportionately into the category. but being white or asian does not preclude you from it.

Which candidate is more attractive to MITES
A person with a low gpa 3.6 ish but very good math SAT scores
Or a person with a high GPA but mediocre SAT math score

I’m a south asian (indian)
am I allowed to put other and specify myself as south asian?
I also wanted to know if ACT has to be with the essay or without the essay
Also, what are the average scores for MITES applicants? and the application only says to submit english and math scores only. Is this a mistake?
Thanks

@kunalkunal2

I’m South Asian and I indicated myself as Asian on the application and ended up being accepted. However, I guess it’s up to you though.

The scores have a wide range actually, so don’t worry too much about them. Like everyone else says, just be yourself and show how the program would really help you. I think the essays are really important.
