MITES 2012 Information and Discussion

I requested as well. :)

I requested!

HI. I applied to MITES but i doubt I will get accepted. I got accepted to LEAD Engineering at Villanova but I’m also applying to PREFACE in Rensselaer. Supposing I got accepted at PREFACE, which one should I go to?? Which one is more competitive and has a better curriculum?

Requested~

@santa
ask your question on a thread, not here, for more opinions.

MITES has had like 2 people from nebraska attend. Is this an advantage or disadvantage to me?

I also requested. This is the only summer program I applied to (only one that interested me that was free), so I’m pretty nervous.

Hey you guys!

As a past MITES alumni I just wanted to say that this program is serious work. Do not accept the offer to come if you are not ready to bust your ass for 6 weeks. Along with that this was also one of the most fun and eventful summers I have ever had (Look out for the martha’s vineyard trip) so keep that in mind also. It is a great program and the students you meet there will be some of your closest friends. When Shawna (The director) says you will all become a family she definitely knows what she is talking about. I wish that all of you could get in but this is not the reality of the situation. I’ll try to answer any questions that I can so just ask away.

Awww that makes me want MITES even more ):

I saw some of my TAs for MITES in that video. That brings back really great memories.

@yjadenw: i have 2 questions:

how many non-URM’s are accepted ( I know the number has been going up, but how many your year)?

how many people are on the waitlist/ what is the chance of getting in from the waitlist?

The more I think about MITES, the more I feel like I’m going to be rejected >.<

My year everyone was a URM (lol not exactly) everyone had a claim to something. One girl claimed eskimo, some claimed native-american, I’d say that the number is there but it isn’t really that many usually you’d have some claim to something even if it is virtually non-existent.

I honestly couldn’t tell you about the waitlist, everyone that was accepted my year (This summer past) went. A large majority of the waitlist students are either accepted to E2 or to another online program.

@YJadenW What do the MITES evaluations they give you at the end say?

EDIT: Also, was there anyone accepted who went to a private school or were you guys all public schools?

(i go to a public school, so I’m hoping all publics. haha)

There was a mixture, but as with college admissions most came from public schools so you should be good.

The evaluations basically give a breakdown of your performance and improvement during the 6 weeks. You’ll frequently hear the sentiment of “It’s all about the Delta” and it truly is. I placed into Physics II with no calc background so the first 3 weeks were a problem for me. I got a 50% on the midterm but after some encouraging remarks from the teacher and TA and some introspection I landed a 91% on the final with a whole section on capacitance and Gaussian fields 100% correct. Thus my eval was superb for physics. Just work your hardest and your evals will be good, trust me.

Thanks so much for your answers!! :D

No worries, anytime.
