MITES 2012 Information and Discussion

hey have any of the mostec people received their info packets.

lionstav: not that I know of… I just want to get my information already!

Hi guys! I was waitlisted but am now officially in the E2@mit program. Can’t wait!! Has anyone received info packets? I’d really like to make travel plans before prices go up.

@mostec people

I got my info through email two days ago. Seems extremely legit.

is it ok or normal rather that i haven’t even received a confirmation e-mail about anything?? I sent them two e-mails and still haven’t heard anything yet.

Try calling the MITES office directly. I’ve called a couple of times and each time someone has answered the phone immediately, and has given me an answer to my questions as well.

I did call them, the woman at the other en said that she’d have the director give me a ring the same day, but he never did.

How did you guys enjoy the E2/MITES???

When will the 2013 forum be up?

I’m planning to apply to MITES. :D

Also, for people who got accepted into MITES:
Did you have any prior research experience?
I read on the MITES website and it says that you have a leg up if you are URM/first generation/etc and I’m none… arguably. I’m 100% Asian from my home country, both of my parents have graduated college, etc. The only problem is that I live in a city in a state with limited opportunities (people in adjacent cities can easily find science-related internships and whatnot) and so I have NO experience in the field of science whatsoever… I am not sure I stand a chance against the people who have one of the qualities listed on the MITES page and the people who have had several offers of research internships/etc. u___u

Well, gomdorri, you can be a minority within the Asian population. Do you associate yourself with any identity that is rare for an Asian?

Although MITES isn’t a research program, as far as I understand. It’s an advanced STEM exploration program intended to give exposure to students especially of minority and underpriveleged backgrounds. A lack of STEM extracurriculars may harm your chances of getting in, and demographically it doesn’t seem like you fit the average MITES acceptee, imo. (Look at the picture of last year’s MITES on the websites, I think you’ll find a general absence of Asian males.)

But, there are still a dozen other programs to get accepted to next year, so I wouldn’t worry about it.

No haha.
I’m 100% Korean, and far from being considered a minority (especially since Korean culture includes competition and all of my cousins are absolute geniuses in everything they do/etc…)

I’m a girl.

And so do I have no chance since I don’t have any background in STEM?
I’m still debating whether I should apply or not. I can do well on my SAT (2300+) and I live in a state that doesn’t give many opportunities for anything, but I don’t have anything else going for me…

Apply. You have nothing to lose.

I have a problem.
I was supposed to take AP Calc BC this year, but couldn’t because of schedule incompatibilities (I wanted to take it, but it was in the same period as a class I absolutely have to take before graduation). As a result, I don’t have any math class this year. Last year, my teacher was rarely in the classroom and instead, we had a student teacher teaching us so my teacher has pretty much NO idea who I am.

The MITES application requires a recommendation letter from a math teacher, so what should I do?

^Ask them, not us…

How was the MIT MITES program?? Please update us! Thanks so much…

How were the classes? The food? Were you guys given some independence? Were you guys given any independence in your daily activities? Or was there hand holding? The reason I ask is because a friends daughter did a program and they were NOT allowed to go to the dorm during the day, only allowed back after classes were over @ 4pm and had other strict rules.

The program was amazing. Like many that have said before, it’s a summer that will change your life forever.

The classes were hard but doable. I was placed into Calculus 1, which covers AP Calc AB. Just an idea of how fast the class move we learn everything in about 15 90 minutes lectures. The class placement is depended on a diagnostic test taken the first few day of the program. MITES will put you in the class hardest for you. From my year, 2012, a girl with no Calculus knowledge was placed in physics 3 ,which required calculus, because she knew physics well.
There is a student center but the food was mediocre. The dinning is hall is average. Food was the last thing on people when they get there.
There is a lot of independence at MITES. You’re allowed to do anything you want as long as you let your TA know. It can easily done through a text message. Classes are from 9AM to 5PM and the rest of the time is up to you. There weren’t many rules other than the usual obvious ones. No curfew at all so students could just walk around the dorm. All-nighters are expected.

Applying for 2013… so nervous >.<

 1. What did everyone here write for the “racial/ethnic identity” question? I want to say that it hasn’t really affected me much, but I feel as if that would be the wrong answer (Ghanaian male)…
 2. Income statuses?

@hoctopi 1) write what you believe! the only tip I have for essay writing is to make sure that you like what you’re writing, and that you think it accurately represents who you are and how you think; also, reread and revise! I had multiple drafts for each of my essays, especially the one about challenges. In the end, I submitted with a few typos (rookie mistake!), but the message still got across.
2) I can’t remember, I just know I clicked the box for free lunch. Don’t worry about that though! Every MITES class is incredibly diverse, even in the socioeconomic sense.

Conclusion: work hard on your application, but don’t stress about it! Good luck! :D

Thanks for the advice! I think I’ll be revising the essays for all of the holidays…
Happy holidays to all!

I’m a junior high school student from Texas my PSAT scores won’t so hot put my calc BC scores are A’s. I haven’t started on my essays and I need to finish them today so I could give them to my remmondees and have time to revise them any suggestions?
