@Iuvenilis: Sounds fun x). I haven’t heard of that either though! I don’t eat out much; my taste buds prefer plain food xD

@Lovely: Oh wow, have you ever made it that far?

@Azn: I’ve only read one Artemis Fowl book, but I loved it. And Justin and Michael? I have no idea how many hours I’ve spent on their channel; they’re so great!

Wow, nearly 2000. Oh well. At least I gave myself a shot, lol…

@Azndj Hey. I’m Vietnamese too! I’m a MITES 2012 alum. My MITES experience was great! I was definitely challenged although other alum might say otherwise, i.e don’t listen to them :). MITES was the hardest thing I’ve done. The class work and homework wasn’t hard to the point that it’s impossible. The program is structured in a way that there will be barely time to do everything; you’ll have to learn how to manage your time really well. I know people who went to sleep at 10 every day and people who goes to sleep at 3-4 am or not at all. My experience was positive. I enjoyed all of MITES. You’ll be in Simmons for 6 weeks. The dorm is cool but might not be for everyone. Everything is a bit far apart. One thing for sure is your room will be huge compared to other college dorm. Everything is modular and compact. MITES really reinforced my choice in MIT. It changed my perspective on live and what hard work, intelligence, and learning really mean. I used to hate biology but 6 weeks in biochem at MITES changed all of that. It’s the hardest hardest hardest class life science class (possibly all subject) in the program. It made me want to study bio at a molecular level! That’s just my experience alone. Some people figured that MIT is not for them, others find MIT to be the PLACE. If you have any questions just ask.

Rowzay is an alum from Delaware Can’t remember if any of the other students were from Delaware, but a TA was too!

Also, just saying again: RSI and MITES are very different programs, which include an international vs. national student body. MITES required a lot more collaboration than RSI, which was definitely more individual. I LOVED getting to know other MITESers through pset parties.

Furthermore, don’t let the numbers depress you. What happens, will happen. I remember logging onto the website about 4 times before I realized that it wasn’t a mistake: I had gotten in. I’ve never considered my achievements particularly extraordinary (or extraordinary at all), so don’t worry about it. It’s good prep for waiting for college acceptances (speaking as a MITES alum, it’s hard to watch your friends get in and while pleased for them, you wonder if it’s going to happen to you, hence: long wait).

EDIT: Also to go off Dang’s post, I went to bed generally before 12, sometimes earlier. I would go to bed early, and wake up at 5 or so to finish work and go back to sleep. It was weird, but it worked for me.

I love FBLA!!! It’s one of my favorite clubs in the world!

What events are you competing in this year? And out of curiosity, have you ever made it to nationals before? I’d love to meet you there (assuming we both make it lol)!

Good luck with your MITES application, by the way!

Oh, and I believe I’m the first Washingtonian here :P

@al2014 From the website it says March but past years notifications came out during the 1 or 2nd week of April. Judging from the fact that they pushed the deadline back and more applicants applied this year, my best guest would be the April date.

Wow, quite a few of you responded to the ethnicity post… a lot of Asians. I noticed a lot of you wrote about your interests outside of engineering. As far as my essays go, I focused them all on STEM for the sake of looking like an ideal applicant.

I think I did great, except I earned a B in AP Calculus as a sophomore. I hope they take the grade I was in into consideration.

@al2014 the email I got from them when I submitted my application said mid-April, but the site says March. I’m hoping for March, but Dangitdang could be right.

I’m curious to know what you guys wrote your essays about. Since talking about all of them would be a bit much, lets talk about an interesting one. What did you guys write for the invention essay? I actually wrote two versions, and submitted the second. The first was on nuclear fusion, but I thought it might not be the best thing to write about later. I wanted something that I was both interested in and would be unique, showing a part of me that isn’t just math and science. I sent in an essay about a dream-recorder. You could re-watch your dreams, and this would expand psychology greatly, and possibly give insight into different mental disorders through patterns in dreams, or open windows to understanding the subconscious. Although it is kind of science-y I thought it would be good to write about.

So, what did you guys write about for the invention essay?

@run1116 I took the liberty of writing about something crazy and awesome since it said “anything” haha. I wrote about developing an Alcubierre drive to allow us to travel at superluminal speeds without violating the special theory of relativity.

@MobiusUno My favorite EC is National Science Bowl for sure :D

@RowZay42 oh man haha that’s tough. Hey, I read in the beginning of the thread that you said MITES has no rules? So no curfew or anything?
