@lldm21, What makes you say they (Robotics Team) aren’t to be taken seriously?
That aside, yeah, the year really seems to be speeding along so far.

Also, why are we using “@” when we’re not using Twitter .-. Just a thought.

@Mobius: They don’t actually do much aside from screw around. I was going to join it, but then my friend who was on it told me all about it, and yeah. Plus, I’m not friends with any of the guys on it (no girls anymore, to my knowledge), so that wouldn’t be a perk of joining either…

I’ve always used it, even prior to the birth of Twitter. What do you usually use?

lldm21, To be honest, I’d normally just write their name with a comma after it, as such.
(On the side, girls on the team is only a perk if you have any luck with them @_@ Still working on that one)

@Leviticus- do you! i really enjoy it(can’t say that enough! :P). I am hispanic/latino, but most apps don’t let you choose hispanic in the same category as race so I’d like to choose both, but people get iffy if you say your native american and can’t prove it. However, nothing is said if I claim to be white and can’t prove it.
Si hablo espa

@al my school is the opposite, we have tons of math and science but no sports. Zero. It’s pretty unorthodox but I don’t mind. I was kinda worried at first that admissions wouldn’t like that I have no sports in my ECs, but I’m sure they understand all schools are different, so don’t worry :)

Is anyone also applying to SSP?

@jose que bueno haha yo tambien, mis papas son de Mexico entonces creci hablando espanol yeah, if an application wants to know my race I say white, and if it wants my ethnicity I saw Hispanic. Some friends have told me the same thing about how you need to prove you’re native american haha I don’t know why that is though.

Might as well give SSP a shot, even though it seems somewhat expensive @_@

I’m not sure if I want to apply to SSP. Is it engineering related?

Yeah. Astrophysics and stuff. They teach you how to track near-earth objects.

I think I’m gonna give it a shot.

Great to see the place so active havn’t been on in a while. I did horrible during my first seamester due to bullying, it sucks being a full IB student with people who will do anything to get you out and being told by them that they want you out. Although I prob wont get in I hope everyone else has good luck in getting in.

Sounds like it’s going to be a good long wait for the decisions. So many Texans… +1 from Texas.

I’m a Hispanic/Asian female. I have a 4.18 W/4.00 UW GPA, and 216 on the PSAT. Also sent in my January SAT of 2110 late. Does anyone know if they consider those?
What was the hardest essay prompt for you? I left the invention one for the last because it was so difficult to decide on and explain in an interesting way. I settled on the tricorder :D

Geekis, I think I remember them saying something about not taking January scores, but I may be wrong. Best of luck though.
Honestly, The life challenge was hardest, I had a lot of trouble fitting it within the word limit.

@jose14520 @leviticus I’m Hispanic and I’m also a FIRST participant, in team 3478! I’m actually an American living in Mexico (hence the 1 living abroad on the list). This weekend I’m resting after a tiring week to meet the robot build deadline. What regionals are you participating in? My team is going to the Alamo Regional. Hopefully we’ll make it to the Championship, my team was the Rookie All Star for the 2011 Season. What are your teams??

I actually centered much of my application in my participation in FIRST, on many different aspects of that, like the fact that I was was chosen to be the Team’s Lead Programmer for the season. One of my recommenders is also the school’s Science Department Director and he knows me well and of my participation in FIRST, I’m sure he mentioned some of that. Apart from FIRST, I mentioned my other extracurriculars in my application like preparation for the Math and Physics Olympiads and my role as Class Representative in the Student Government.

Sent from my Nexus 4 using CC

All of my essays were exactly 500 (or whatever the limit was) words. I had to drop a few adjectives on all of them in order to get them there, but I’m satisfied.

My hardest was was the future career one because I’m drawn in a ton of different directions.

Well there is more people here doing Robotics than I expected. HEY :)! Captain of Team 59 (though I found that out after I sent the application xD) over here, not recycled, though we are technically a Rookie team since we hadn’t participated in FRC in 4 years. Anyhow I also applied to MITES too and one of my essays was about how much I love Robotics, just putting that out there.

Anyhow, do you guys know any specifics as to date in which they will release who entered MITES or not? All it read was March and I don’t want to make my teacher write my QuestBridge application if I get into MITES.

Edit: My hardest prompt was the challenge essay since I wasn’t sure whether to write about one my hardest challenges or play around by writing a very ambiguous piece which made writing the essay itself be the challenge. In the end I picked an actual challenge, but I wrote both either way xD.

Wow, I’m surprised about the forum’s activity after the deadline! It seems like we all have so much in common and very sad only a few of us will be able to immerse ourselves in the awesomeness of MITES :-/ I wish we could all just have a big internet nerd-out party.

Anyways, I will join in. I am hispanic female from Georgia (yay, first one?), first generation college student and immigrant. I don’t have any STEM background, but hope to go into Chemical Engineering. I participate in Science Olympiad, MUN, and do research outside of school. My “numbers” were basically the scariest part about my application. Sometimes I feel bad about you “low” test scores, when I would die to get over the 2000 mark :-/
In my free time i listen to college radio. I enjoy listening to Joy Division, New Order, The Cranberries, of Montreal, and oh so much eclectic music to annoy my neighbors and bring joy to my heart.

Just wanted to say I share your liking of New Order! On the top of my head, I like their songs Bizarre Love Triangle, True Faith, and Blue Monday. Do you like/Have you heard any of those?

@jhanson

As much as I hate to admit… You are a Hispanic female. Your chances are above average, assuming your scores are above 180/1800.

@Jhansen: I’m not familiar with any of those except for the Cranberries :P

Chemical engineering sounds cool… what do you like about it?
