MITES 2013 Discussion

@jhansen, Yeah, Sci Oly! What events do you do? (I’m on Astronomy, Circuit Lab, Robot Arm, and for some strange reason Material Science)

Someone should keep emailing them once a week to ask if they’ve decided on a decisions release day yet. I feel that I’m bothering them since I’ve already sent 23 emails.

I’m not going to apply to QuestPrep if I get in to MITES.

Hey guys! I haven’t had time to read the entire thread, but how many other Maryland applicants are there?

Too lazy to read the whole thread, but how many applicants are there per year?

I love them all, thirtythr33.
Post punk and new wave are my favorite genres. For the most part, I keep this to myself since not very many people enjoy that type of music, so I definitely enjoying meeting other folks that share the liking for New Order.

@rivstein: I had a dead 180. I took all honors and AP classes and doubled on math and science two years straight. My GPA is kinda on the low side, ~3.7. SO yes, I am extremely scared. Being hispanic female sucks on the types of circumstances I’ve had to deal with… not sure how much it will play in college apps later though :-/

@lldm21: I love chemistry so much! But ChemE doesn’t have that much chem in it to begin with. If there’s any chem-related ChemE areas no involving a lot of bio, i’m all for it!

@MobiusUno: I’m in MatSci, Thermo, Gravity Vehicle, and Boomilever. Sometimes I volunteer for ExpDesign. I love Materials Science, dude. It’s a very fun event. Though I basically took a class on it last semester, so kids from my school compete for 1st place at every competition… can’t wait for STATE!! :-)

You make my credentials sound like crap. I wish I had done all those clubs and competitions, there’s nothing in my area.

I emailed MITES and this is what they said

You will be notified to log on to the website via email for your decisions. Decisions will be available in mid April.

bahhh mid April?

I was hoping that I wouldn’t have to send the rest of my applications since they said March on their page…

Welp, I guess this calls for another full month of writing applications.

So anxious! Thought I’d be hearing soon! HAHAHAHA

Am I the only person who feels they haven’t done anything near the things you guys are talking about haha

@dokingsler I feel the exact same way! There are just not many math/science opportunities where I live. I often worry that this will be a disadvange for me here as well as in the college applications.

Wait what are the benefits to Quest Bridge Prep?

This is slightly off-topic, but I just want to take this opportunity to say that I hate job searching :l. I’ve filled out about six applications now.

@doking: No, definitely not. I haven’t done much either.

We get decisions in mid-April? I can’t afford that. I need my decisions, at the latest, by the end of March. Does anyone have any suggestions for what I should do if we really don’t get decisions by then?

So I was one of the MITES student of last year and I just wanted to wish everyone good luck! The MITES program is incredible, it changes your life honestly. If accepted and you decide to go, you will be challenged incredibly. Emphasis on challenge. I met some of my best friends at MITES and I still keep in contact with all of them daily even though we are all going our separate ways in universities ( although there is a great majority of us attending MIT ). Again don’t stress out for the admission decisions (Don’t shake that baby as you future MITES kids will learn )! They will come out eventually :slight_smile: and Don’t be discouraged if you are not accepted! There is only a certain amount of positions after all. Also, I recommend making a Facebook Page once decisions come out. It is nice to meet your future summer classmates early! Also, some of us 2012 MITES kids might drop in and answer all the questions you all may have. Again, Good luck!

A few of you still don’t understand what MITES looks for. Having limited exposure to science and engineering is a plus, if anything. The goal of MITES is to INTRODUCE under-exposed students (who demonstrate great potential) to STEM fields. The ideal candidate is a minority with good grades/scores whose essays reflect attributes of an individual with great potential, but without the accessibility to STEM related resources.

@Clemolo

I’m sorry for being a stereotypical CC member, but may you please share your stats at the time of applying to MITES as well as when you applied to MIT? I would really appreciate it.

@Rivstein

It’s fine. I guess I am proof that you don’t need a fantastic psat or sat score to get into MITES. When I applied I had a 1630 on my PSAT and a 28 on my ACT. Took about 3 AP classes the year I applied, but prior to that not really anything fancy. Just a few honors.
I had an unweighted GPA of 3.93 and a weighted GPA of 4.3. Did xc and track and honors society back in those days. Also had completed 3 engineering programs the past summer at NCCU, UNCC, and UMD. Let me emphasize something here, for those who believe scores are everything, pretty wrong statement. A good transcript is crucial and a good standardized score is fine too, but probably the most important part of any application ( MITES or Not ) is the essay portion. You must put your soul into your typing. Show them who you are. Describe your life and be honest. Don’t try to make yourself that “ideal” student. Recognize your flaws, and use them to your advantage.

As for when I applied to MIT… Well lets just say I got upgraded in a few positions, 4 more AP classes, higher gpa, higher ACT score. Like I said, and this is especially true about MIT, scores are of little importance. Transcript will show if you a truly prepared to handle MIT and the deciding fact depends on your recommendations and your essays. A perfect GPA and perfect SAT score will not get you into MIT if you have crappy essays and recommendations. So when applying to MIT be sure to dedicate plenty of times in your essays and when choosing your recommenders. If you are extremely curious about my stats and extracirruclars just send me a message on here. I won’t keep that info from you if you are truly interested.

@Clemolo & other past MITES attendants: Thanks so much for posting; your posts have answered a lot of our questions, and it’s also really cool to hear about your experiences then and now :)

No problem, and I bet some of the other MITES 2012 already posted this, but if you want to learn about how MITES has effected all of our lives we have a blog that we update every now and then and share our stories. We write this to share our experience and what we have learned in the time past MITES. I hope you all will enjoy these.

Does anyone has the link to the application website? (check in your browser history) They just deleted the URL on the website. I want to go back and review my application and copy some essays out!
