MITES 2013 Discussion

al2014, It’s the best

Wow, that took a while to catch up >.> What’s up

If it’s not too late for all of the cool Q&A, I’m a, African American guy
(Wow, I’m shocked at how many of you are girls)

I’d have to say MIT’s my top choice, it’s such an awesome place, although I’m in complete panic about applying there later this year.

and oh god, rankings… my class is hyper competitive. The top 10-15 people in the class have +4.0 GPAs, and the next 10-15 have 99s

I’d say I"m independent. I think I really don’t know enough about politics and haven’t put enough thought to give a party affiliation or declare myself a particular label. However, I definitely do lean to the liberal side on many issues. Politics to me seems that it’s based on who raised you, not what is truly right (not that there is an answer to everything.) That might be why I love math and science; there really is a right answer to everything.

I live in Texas too - Dallas area.

Ahh, too much Texan competition D: Ghanaian male, by the way.

THOUGH I WOULD LIKE TO ASSERT SOMETHING. I don’t think that science/math are really about the “right” answer; after all, everything we know is based on empirical observations/evidence. There’s no “truth” but what we create in order to understand the universe a little bit better. Same with math, in the sense that math is an entirely man-made concept. Which often leaves certain concepts up for debate in the mathematics world(like whether or not .999999 = 1 and the true definition of infinity and whatnot). So yeah, no right answers. Not quite. :3

Ahaha, I just love the nature of science. Like philosophy, but entirely empirical and hands on and ahhhh. Which is why the “right answer” thing totally presented an opportunity to science-rant.

Oh oh oh oh oh oh
Inspirational people list:

-Neil DeGrasse Tyson

KEEP IT GOING

I came across a post by a MITES alumni in the MITES 2012 thread that might ease our worries about in-state competition (post 47).

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/summer-programs/1186921-mites-2012-information-discussion-4.html

@ Hoctopi: I just KNEW someone was going to point out my statement. I was going to put in a “don’t try to argue with my statement, you know what I mean” but thought I had put in enough parentheses in one post. But yes, I agree with you. And I am sure you at least mostly understand and agree with me. I’m a pretty big philosophy person too, at times, haha. I like having those kinds of discussions.

@Sky360: Thanks! That’s a relief :slight_smile:
@run1116: Bahahaha, I agree, I agree! I had a feeling that’s what you meant. But hey, science rants are fun haha
Glad to know I’m not the only one who likes a bit of philosophy here and there. :D

@Hoctopi I live in El Paso. Western-most city of Texas, on the border with New Mexico state and Mexico. Very liberal city. All of our delegation to the Texas legislature is Democratic and so is our Congress rep.

I’m one of the few Republicans I know :P

I also agree with your statement on the nature of science. The only thing that we know for sure, is that we don’t know anything for sure. Absolute truth is perceived truth.

At the end of the day, scientists are philosophers, don’t you think? Isn’t that how science started out? Scientists always try to tie their findings to the big questions like, “why are we here?”, etc.

Inspirational Person: Ronald Wilson Reagan, 40th POTUS :D

I’m from Georgia–Metro Atlanta

@MobiusUno: You sound like an awesome possum guy–do you have an afro? Can you pull of a Jimi Hendrix impersonation? haha, if so, you can get more awesome points!

A bunch of kids applied from my school. Though, I believe my story is most sincerely a story of overcoming odds that they never came across. It’s hard knowing what program is for whom, but given their backgrounds and opportunities, i think that half-minorities from a wealthy family with a long line of STEM family and glowing resources in their youth fit better at like, RSI than MITES. just saying.

I am a technically a liberal. Within limits. I dislike labels way to much. I call myself “indie”–one without label. Then that term gave off a sort of hipster vibe, so I am just nothing atm. I do love musics and odd clothes. Just not any sort of pretentiousness.

ANYWHO…
I have TWO PILLOWPETS.
I need to name them–I have a puppy and a bunny.

BEST NAMES WINNN!!! :-)

name it Alpha and Beta, it’s nerdy enough.

I must get into MITES!

Does anyone know who reads out applications? What kind of MIT staff members?

My guess is that it’s probably MITES people (staff, admins) that read applications since they know who will benefit from the program. As for the staff, it’s probably MIT faculty and students with backgrounds in STEM fields.

I’m not a politics person so I don’t think I’ll say I have some sort of affiliation, I’m not a citizen either so I am not in too much demand for one lol.

Inspirational person: Dean Kamen, founder of FIRST

Sent from my LG-MS840 using CC

Actually, as one of the alumni pointed out, our apps are read by admissions and then passed on to the MITES office. The same people who might eventually accept us are the ones who narrow down the applicant pool to 200.

I’m an agnostic Libertarian. Both my parents are Christian Democrats.

As far as Neil Degrasse Tyson goes, I second that motion and raise you a Ron Paul.

I’m the only applicant from my school and most likely my county. I don’t know you guys, but I already like you all. I can’t have CC style conversations with anyone I know AFK.

There are four applicants from my school; however I believe only two of us are somewhat qualified for MITES. Unfortunately, there was a change in councilor, so there’s a chance no one from here gets in (she made us write our own recommendations -.-).

^Thats not allowed!!!

Leviticus, did you just describe my political affiliation? Weird, haha

And as far as I know, I’m the only one from my school. I had a friend about to apply, but our calc teacher wouldn’t write one for him because it was too short notice (two weeks before due date). Sucks.

And I’m not sure what I want to major in yet. It’s looking like Neurosciences, and a possible double-major in something non-science. :P

jhansen, OH GOD. That just made my day. I have my moments, but I’d hardly consider myself that. Oh and for the sake of all things random “David” and “Bowie”.

OzzyArmas, Wow, and I thought it was annoying getting an appointment. Hope it goes well, especially later on.

Anyone know when we will get results back?? I’m starting to get really nervous!

Mid-April :/
