MITES 2013 Discussion

4 more pages until we break 1000 posts!

I’m slightly jealous you guys have some ethnicity issue to complain about. Here, Miami, I am surrounded by hispanics (which I am as well). That being said, ethnicity hasn’t really affected me much. Except for the fact that this is called North Cuba (-_-) and I’m Venezuelan. However it feels just like home but with less (a lot less) thieves.

Ozzy, same here haha. Hispanics are the vast majority in El Paso, so ethnicity isn’t a challenge here.

Does anyone have any advice on how to find an engineering professor mentor? I need a mentor for my senior engineering project, but I don’t know what would be the best way to approach finding one.

@2roads My mentor actually attended MIT and might know someone. Did you want me to give you his email?

@Mobius: I’ve been called the whitest black girl since Kindergarten. Actually, just the other day, my (new) friend in my AP Chem class asked if I was black (she’s from an extremely white town, and most of the black kids in my school fit the stereotype, so it makes sense, I guess), and I’m darker than peanut butter xD. & then other people, who know I’m black, think I’m like. a disgrace. because of my personality. And then still others think I’m just plain racist because almost all of my friends are white (pro-tip to them: if your town is ~80% white, it, statistically, makes sense that most of your friends are white, ignoring any variables like personalities, whatever).

also, does anyone here frequent Tumblr? C:

2000 applicants is insane. Thought it said 750 for last year, not 1750 :-/

Welp, that kinda takes away the point of spending so much time here hoping. There’s always a chance to get in… but it’s just a chance. 2 folks at school got E2 and one got MITES, so at least I hope that they know my school enough to value my app.

Let’s update each other on how the other programs go.

@Nashia That’d be awesome if your mentor is okay with it! How did you find your mentor though? I’m asking because I have no idea which project my teacher will approve next year and I am expected to find a mentor that specializes in the field of engineering dealing with my project/invention in an unrealistic timeframe. Thanks for your help!

@OzzyArmas: It’s the same in SWFL, except instead of being North Cuba, it’s mostly Mexicans here. I’m Chilean, though, and no one ever know where Chile is. And I always get the obligatory “Is it chilly in Chile? Do you eat a lot of chili? Harharhar!”
As if I hadn’t heard that one before -.-

Wow, I miss one day, and I have to read so many pages to catch up. I’ll try to address what was brought up, even though it was late.

@The low SAT/ACT thing: I remember hearing that 20s ACT (not high 20s either) got into MITES before. Even though a 23 is not very high, that doesn’t mean you have no chance. Be hopeful. I’m sure there are kids with low 20s that get in and many with high 30s that will be rejected.

@Rivstein’s 44 acres: Wow, I live in a suburb and own no extra land like that. Also, if you don’t get MITES (which you may or may not, I can’t say) then there must be something you can do, even if you do live in the middle of nowhere. However, make sure you plan ahead, so you’re not caught off guard with nothing to do.

@White/blackness: I think it’s stupid. I don’t think we should expect blacks to automatically be misbehaving, uneducated, substandard criminals. Nevermind, I don’t think, I know. It really sucks for those of us who are black and are being labeled with the “white” stereotype. I’m half-black (and half-asian) myself, but I am often seen as black (well, again with the stereotypes, I’m perceived as Asian when people consider my academic achievements, and actually I wrote about this in my essay) and get the white thing sometimes. I guess I used to be “more black” in some people’s eyes, and now that I’ve changed since going to a magnet school and I guess “refining” myself, I might seem more white to people.

@2000 applicants: Yes, that is a lot, and I would expect it to be around that number. With only 80 getting into MITES… we are all against steep competition. I hope my stats, recs, and essays are good enough to get me in. Actually, I think my stats are fine, but then again most people that get in have great stats. I lack several hooks, but I do have a couple, so maybe that will help me some. I am not expecting to get in, but then again, it feels like I MUST get in, like it wouldn’t be real for me not to (not conceit or arrogance, but just a feeling that if I didn’t get into MITES, then everything I have been wishing for and thinking about in my head will never become reality.)

@Why I want MITES and what I want to do in the future: What’s not there to like about MITES? First is the fact that it’s at MIT, where I want to go for undergrad. Second is that I’ll be able to take these awesome classes that I’d love to take. Third, I’d be able to get connections with MIT people (including the fellow MITESers, whatever you call them) and have people I know once I go there for undergrad (assuming I actually get in.) Fourth, it’s gonna be the most amazing six weeks of my life! The social aspect, the MIT college environment, the people, classes, first extended period of being on my own away from family… it just sounds amazing to experience.

For the future, I want to go into research. I feel like it is my purpose in life (well… I feel like this is what I want to spend my life doing) to find, discover, invent, figure out, or insert similar verb something that advances society and really improves our understanding of the world around us. Because I want to do Physics right now, this could mean solving (or helping solve) a major problem in physics, or deriving new things, discovering something, etc. Research is where I want to orient my life.

Wow, turns out that wasn’t corny at all, lol.

Yeah, if there’s anything I actually hate, it’s this annoying stereotype when your nickname was “Blacky” for most of middle school, and you still have people being surprised I don’t sound like I’m from the nastier parts of Brooklyn, it really starts to get to you…

That aside, I can only wish for the best with this program. I REALLY want to have this experience with everyone. It’s just that as the days go on, I’m more and more worried about my own application. @_@ Hope the days fly on by.

To play off of some of the answers to Nashia’s post, What’s everyone’s goal for after college? If you could do anything with your life after college, what would you do?

Personally, I’d dedicate my own life towards advancing space travel, because there’s nothing I’d like to do more that get off of this planet  (Because the universe is fascinating, not because this world is that bad, mind you :P)

@lldm21 I am ozzy-tech-corp.■■■■■■■■■■ (everyone here who has tumblr is welcome xD)

@lovelylily28 A have a friend from Chile (he is a lazy genius, but really cool). Normally, I don’t get along well with the Cuban population here; I know how you feel. Normally when people find out I’m Venezuelan they tend to ask: before the event, “Que hay de tu comandante Chavez?” and After the event, " 'Tas feliz con la muerte de Chavez?" I swear these are probably the most obnoxious questions that ever pop up to me -.-

@run1116 Dude, I leave for a couple of hours and this gets like three pages. I’m obviously exaggerating, but this thread is gaining a lot of activity ( I’ve been spending more time here than tumblr xD). Also, I love physics and research; perhaps we’ll work together in a lab at MIT in the future lol.

Everyone here wants to get into MITES like crazy, I truly believe at least three of you will get in. I may be wrong, I may be right, I am very optimistic. Even though I try to depress myself about not getting in because if I don’t I would be more devastated than I should be.

Ozzy, well on the bright side of everything, we’re definitely more active than last year’s thread. We’re close to surpassing them already, and decisions aren’t even out yet. :D

@MobiusUno I actually want to do the same thing, thus my love for aerospace engineering and physics (wormhole-traveling-spaceships XD). Although I believe the world will get that bad by the time wormhole-traveling is fully available to machinery weighing tons.

Also, I felt bad for not addressing any of the racial issues so I guess I’ll do something small. I come from a land of diversity, so I don’t believe that racism or any racist label should be applied to anyone; of course, unless it is by joking around with a close friend of yours that doesn’t get easily insulted or find it offensive in any manner… the label isn’t serious, it is just to be humorous. I don’t mind if they are applied to me as long as they don’t involve Chavez lol.

I guess its cause we are too friendly

Ozzy, hey who knows, maybe we’ll be able to figure something out! I wouldn’t mind seeing alpha centauri before I kick the bucket, lol

Oh man… It’ll be so hard to decide if MITES or Research :(

@MobiusUno: If I could do anything, I would teach. All I hear from my parents and friends and even teachers is ,"Why on earth would you want to teach when you could be a doctor/lawyer/engineer and make tons of money?"I love math and science, and I want to help students love it. Or at least understand it. Especially considering how the US has fallen behind in math and science compared to other developed nations. Buuuut, I might fall in love with some type of physics/engineering thing in college and end up going that route.

@OzzyArmas: That would bother me too. I normally don’t mind labels either, unless it’s something completely ignorant like, “Oh, You’re hispanic? So is your last name, like, Gonzalez or something?”

Four people from CC were accepted last year. Half of them were lurkers.

Lurkers, show yourselves!
'Ya creepy bastards…

(I’m dothejitterbug.tumblr, by the way.)

@Osvaldo: Consider yourself followed >: ).

You will probably see a lot of song lyrics/anime/Disney GIFs/art in your dash from my blog. Jsyk.

Can we just rig it so that everyone from CC gets in? I mean, we’re all smart; we could probably figure something out :P.

I don’t think they want to ruin the show we are giving with so many posts lol.

@lovelylily28 I actually love teaching as well, but that is something I want to do after I retire. And its for the same reasons as you do, I want to inspire others directly. I honestly don’t want a job for whatever income it gives me, I want a job because I love it. The money is just something I need for a least stressful life.

@MobiusUno I will be satisfied with Titan and setting up a habitable area in Mars. But if you want to go so far away, why not? I’ll help you out lol
