MITES 2013 Discussion

I’m also wondering the effect on acceptance if you don’t waive your right to view the letters of recommendation. Also, I know income has some impact on acceptance into this program, at least in the past. However, I don’t see any place where income information is to be included in the application. Did I miss something or is MITES just not asking for it this year?

I was also wondering about where to tell them our income level. I know my counselor is supposed to say the economic background of the community but I go to a magnet school in a very large city so I do not how she is able to generalize this. I guess the free and reduced lunch thing shows one’s economic status. Also, if 100% of your school goes to college, will this be a detriment to my application?

I emailed MITES and asked if we need to waive our rights and this is what she replied.

“You do not have to waive your rights; however, some teachers prefer if students waive their rights before writing recommendations. From our end, it will have no bearing on your application.”

My teachers still didn’t write their recommendations yet. T.T

Were you guys realistic with your invention? All of my ideas have been done before, so I’m tempted to do something a little extreme.

@niceboat SAME 7 days left and none of my teachers have done their recommendations yet >.<

Am I the only one having a problem with the teacher email? o-o The notification won’t go through school emails. I had to ask my teachers for personal emails. :/

@mijuuki the first time the website said it sent but they didnt actually send them, but when i resent them my teachers got it, did you try resending them?

I resent them multiple times. It just so happened that one of my teachers provided a personal email, and he was the only one that received it. :P

Did anyone wrote about an invention that has “kind of” already been invented? That’s the only question I’ve been thinking really hard lately (haven’t work on the essays yet but 2/3 of my recommendations are in)

Does any MITES alumini know if it’s possible to over-qualify in this program? I feel like I’ve taken too many courses out of school and have a really decent school compare to the nation…But that’s because I’m under merit + financial aid. Also, how would they emphasize the application:

URM, Low family income,etc. = ? %
Personal Essay = ? %
Teacher Recommendation = ? %
Sibliings alumini, etc. = ? %
Other = ? %

How u know?

Hey, how do you think the “Languages Spoken” section will affect my application? Do they use it to measure diversity? I speak Chinese and Spanish well enough, but like, if they put me in a class where all the instruction was in one of those languages or gave me a textbook in the language, I wouldn’t do too well. What are you all doing?

I’m curious about that too, I speak German decently enough to watch Youtube videos, but not enough to sit in on a physics class.

How have you guys been approaching the invention essay? In having trouble writing it and could use some assistance

Yes! Deadline has been extended to January 23!!

**January 24th~

But still, yayyy! :DD

i wonder why they extended it? it cant just be that there were many people applying this year

I don’t know why they extended the deadline, but earlier this week, I talked to them about the deadline because my first semester grades weren’t due until this week, and my counselor was hesitant towards my recommendation considering she wanted to include my grades. Maybe they felt the need to do this because that is the same case for multiple people?

Hi, my school counselor asked me to give her my SAT Score Report and I thought the one online would do, yet it says “Unofficial Score Report” and the website asks for the official score report. Where can I find that one, or was I supposed to receive it??

Also, I read in this thread that the teacher’s answers to the questions should also be under 300 words. Where is that specified? Because I think my teacher is writing more than that. Thanks!

Wait, where does it say that they extendded the deadline??
