If I apply early decision to MU- Columbia, could I get a better dorm? Like a suite style maybe?

On my visit the dorms seemed way too small. I have stayed in college dorms before, but I have never seen any that small.

On my visit the dorms seemed way too small. I have stayed in college dorms before, but I have never seen any that small.

common knowledge among all colleges is that freshman get thrown into whatever dorm room the school can find, be it a quad or a single.

I don’t think ED has any effect on it.

Mizzou has a separate housing contract that’s usually made available sometime in mid-March and after submitting that you can choose your room in early April. So applying ED won’t really affect your housing unless you apply to the school super late.

They do it like: if you apply before October, you will be able to pick your room on April 5th. Register before Dec 31st and you can pick your room on the 6th. Any later and you can pick your room on the 7th.

So yeah, the earlier you apply the better.

MU also has FIGS. They are Freshman Interest Groups. They can be according to major or interests. You do not have to be part of one. My son joined the Biochemistry Fig. About 20 kids in his fig will have 3-4 of their core classes together. (Same class, same time) and they will live in the same dorm.

The room next door may have kids from a different FIG, but your roommate will belong and more kids down the hall, etc.

When you log on to get a room, it will ask if you’re considering a fig, then it will show you what dorm is assigned to that Fig & exactly what rooms/beds are open. Then you choose.

We were fortunate enough to get to pick on the first day housing was available to Freshman. (It is correct that if you apply before Oct 31, you get first freshman pick). After that, it was hard to find beds in specific figs since they limit the number.

Some dorm rooms are bigger than others. I know for sure that the rooms in Discovery/Responsibilty/Excellence/Respect Halls are bigger than the rooms in Hatch & Shurz Halls. Some halls have common bathrooms/showers and others have semiprivate bathrooms where you share with the room next door. Freshman can also get into the suites with livingrooms if you’re lucky enough to get to them first.

One of my S’s HS classmates is going to rush a sorority, so she needs to live by Greek Town. Those dorms are older and smaller and farther away. MU has a lot of brand new or nearly new housing, so most of your options are going to be good.

Forgot to mention that the previous poster is correct on the Housing Contract. It is due March 22 with the $350 fee. Watch the “Roar” website and then log on as soon as possible when they tell you your date is to pick your room. Last spring, the system crashed about an hour after it opened. Be patient. :)

Do your research first, decide according to proximity to your classes, the figs offered, and the kind of dorm you want. (Like all women, all men, or coed). Most are coed. When the floor plan comes up , it’ll be easier for you to decide quickly. Some dorms have dining halls in them or at least next door, most have laundry in them also.

They do have Honors specific dorms too.
