Mlk

Sick dude.

YouTube - Martin Luther King "I have a dream"

James Earl Ray was a piece of ****.

^
And so is Rush Limbaugh for wishing him “Godspeed”.

This has nothing to do with the OT but did anyone else find this:

Mlk
hatersunite

oddly disturbing to click on? (Not a jab against you, OP, but just the way it looks on the screen).

Who cares? This thread is to talk about the greatness that is MLK. All other crap can go in another thread.

EDIT: Directed at Saugus, not you roman.

I’m not trying to bring crap in- I’m saying the irony of it. MLK was a great person and looked back on in history with reverence. But even now, (although MUCH more back then), MLK is a way for haters to unite. It was very ironic.

I meant it was OT because it didn’t have to do with the speech- it DID have to do with MLK and his place in history. I should have explained more, that was my mistake and I apologize.

Let’s post MLK quotes that are not from I Have a Dream. It is a magnificent speech, but MLK communicated other, wonderful messages that aren’t repeated enough.

“What is needed in this world is a recognition that power without love is reckless and abusive, and love without without power is sentimental and anemic. Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice and justice at its best is power correcting everything that stands against love.”

Can you believe some people have school tomorrow (well today)? Haha, suckassss!

Whoops, sorry for that haters. Well anyway I had to explain what I meant anyway.

My favorite part about MLK is that he gets me school off tomorrow.

^ That’s disgusting.

Well I mean I like him for other reasons too…but don’t lie, you love the fact that he gets you school off, don’t you? It’s not like that’s the only reason I like him. I don’t hate him because he helped blacks.

I could care less. I only have one class on Mondays so it makes next to no difference to me. Most years it either fell on a vacation day anyway or it was my birthday so my parents would let me stay home.

If it weren’t for MLK, I would probably not be allowed to do quite a number of things.

You know, I wish I could say the same, because I wish I could say MLK’s legacy left a full mark on society. But when he died society degenerated into a convoluted racist, politically-driven mess. And I don’t blame MLK for that whatsoever, because I know his intentions were honest. I know he wanted a race-blind society. But perhaps he never had the true opportunity to carry out his goal or perhaps he never would have been able to; either way, we are living in a bastardization of his goal. I’m not saying that significant progress wasn’t made in the 1960s, because that isn’t true at all. But it is nevertheless half-baked right now, and until it is completely resolved I don’t think we deserve to celebrate MLK’s legacy.

And with that said, I’ll have to cynically agree with SLightManifesto: my favorite part about MLK is the day off from school.

^ Race-relations have greatly improved. 60 years ago, blacks could not go to a “white” school without being tormented and often killed. Minorities could not have good jobs, could not go to college, and couldn’t even date whom they wanted without fearing for their lives. Race-relations will NEVER be resolved. They haven’t in the entire history of mankind and they never will. There will always be a group of people that hate others based on the color of their skin and that is just a cold, hard fact.

We must celebrate MLK’s legacy not merely in what it HAS accomplished and what HAS been done in his name but also what CONTINUES to be done and what WILL be done in the future.

And if you think that his goals were only fulfilled half-way then tell me this: when was the last time you saw a race riot? What about a non-WASP that’s sitting in the White House? Etc.

Are there issues? Yes. Does that mean that we should not celebrate the people that have brought us as far as we’ve come? Absolutely not. If that was the case- we would celebrate absolutely no one in an American history. No one.

Um- how do you know this? Race-relations can be resolved! Everyone makes mistakes and I think the world now- more than ever is growing in acceptance and love.

^ Sorry, I just have 6000 documented years of human history on my side. But other than that… yeah, I’ve got nothing.

There will always be racist people. Always. No matter how progressive people are, no matter X, Y, or Z… there will always be racist people. Period.

ETA: I am a multiracial person engaged to a multiracial guy. I’m not saying it hasn’t improved, I’m saying there will always be racism in one form or another.

JEEZE CODY. You beat me to it.

I love how you’ve had a 4 day weekend to do this.

Ah, procrastination.

I like how I’m talking to you on facebook chat and this at the same time.

[random]It confuses me when people use sick in a positive manner[/random]
