So, I am applying for the MMSS program at NU. However, my counselor wants me to send first quarter grades. I have all As except for a B+ in Multivariable Calculus and Linear Algebra--and its not because I'm slacking! That class is hard! If I submit a B+ in MVC to NU, will it hurt my chances at MMSS, help them, or stay neutral? Maybe it's a good thing for them because I am doing adequately in a tough math class.

I’m gonna go ahead and bump this.

A single grade will not make any difference to your acceptance to NU. It is the total package that counts!

I’m talking about the MMSS program, the one that almost solely looks at math grades/standardized test scores.

A strong high school curriculum, including a year of calculus, is required for admission. to MMSS. Since you must have already taken Calculus prior to taking Multivariable Calculus, it will not hurt (rather,it will nicely supplement) if you send the 1st qtr grades (B+ isn’t bad!).

Good Luck!

Thanks NorthwesternDad, I will probably just send the quarter grade. It is just so frustrating because the B+ is less than a percent from an A- and we have had our grade composed of 2 exams. Any other opinions on the matter?

If you look at the freshman MMSS application, you will see that they do not specifically ask for your grades in any math classes. They ask for your scores on standardized tests such as the ACT, SAT, SAT Subject Tests, and AP Examinations. Your grade in Multivariable Calculus is only important in your admission to Northwestern, as it is very rare that the MMSS admissions officers look at your Northwestern application. So unless the B+ harms your admission to Northwestern, in which case MMSS won’t even see your application, it will not be a problem.

well…i assume that won’t happen. And thanks.
