Definitely no pastels and no beige or gold. I think I look best in darker colors. A rich maroon or navy or dark green are my preference.
I ordered this one that @soozievt posted. It is on sale at Zappos.
That is a hard question. I don’t feel I have a “best” feature I want to highlight. My arms have some decent muscle definition so I don’t mind sleeveless. I carry my weight in the middle and I have a pelvic rotation that makes one hip higher so I do best in things without a defined waistband. I also prefer fabric that isn’t stiff and has some give to it. Wrap styles look hideous on me. I don’t have a large chest so I can get away with a low neckline.
I prefer to not stand out so don’t want a lot of bling on the dress.
That dress you ordered is cute and a nice price. Hope it works and perhaps can be worn for some of the festivities, regardless of whether it’s THE one for the wedding.
@mom60 I’m pleased to know you are going to try one of the dresses out. I like that one that you picked. And wow, that’s a great price. If you like that type of style, just a reminder that this other dress I also linked to, has a similar type of look, though obviously at a much higher price point:
Here are some more, particularly now that you mentioned one you like and also mentioned less bling:

That is so pretty! I love the color and the ruffle. It’s not as “MOB” as others and the price is great. I hope it fits and you love it.
@mom60 that dress was actually my favorite of the ones soozie linked. I hope it works out!
This Alex Evenings dress was the one I wore and it was unbelievably comfortable. The back was not really that low. I do no wear really high heals and the dress length was good on my 5’5” without hemming. So many are very long. A big plus - washable.
I ordered and returned several from Amazon. Easy return at Whole Foods. BUT I obviously didn’t try read something carefully enough. Two were returned to my credit card but one only gave me Amazon credit. It’s ok since I order a lot but if it had been all the dresses it would have been $600+. Just FYI
I have about 2 weeks to return the last one I got from Nordstrom. Pretty sure it’s the one I will wear but is very dark navy and was hoping for something else. I’m going to check out the stores one more time to see if new stuff is out .
I like to buy special items from TheRealReal. Generally, I buy several pieces, choose whichever fits and return the rest. I try to buy ‘NWT’ but not always. When I’ve finished / worn my purchase, I sell it back to TRR
Lots more great choices to look through. At first glance I can eliminate the long sleeves. It could still be warm in California in late October and I’m of an age where I run hot.
Seems so odd to order a dress from Amazon but I agree it’s so easy. I did have that Amazon credit happen for the first time when my H was buying some locks.
@Singersmom07 @thumper1 The one @soozievt linked from Amazon looks like a better back for me. I might order it. How did the sizing run?
Ordered the Halston heritage flounce sleeve and the Alex Evening rosette.
Which one? Sooz sent tons of links!
This one? Very pretty and looks like the same fabric we had, but with a higher back, and no sleeves. In terms of sizing. I think the one I had with the sleeves was true sizing. The 6 I tried on was perfect except I wanted a different color. Mine was altered by the fabulous Lord and Taylor tailors…size 10 but made to fit me perfectly.
The fabric has some stretch to it so there is some give. I loved it. @Singersmom07 ?
@mom60 I’m so happy you found two more to try! Yes, it seems odd to order a dress on Amazon, but these are name brands, and the shipping is free!
Eager to hear how any of these three dresses work for you.
Yes I ordered that one. Sizes were limited in the navy so I’ll see how it fits.
Sizing was perfect for me. I wear a 16 and it was very complementary with no alterations.
When I was searching for my MOG dress, I ordered several from Amazon using their Prime Wardrobe option. I need a petite size (I’m short!) and even though this was pre-Covid, most brick and mortar stores did not carry petite evening gowns. It was an efficient way to try several styles and sizes.
Regarding shoes - I can’t find them online any longer, and I’ll probably horrify all of you, but I ended up wearing Crocs! They were dressy and had a wedge heel, and with the length of my dress were pretty much invisible. I don’t normally wear heels and also have a wide foot, and refused to be uncomfortable all evening!
These are not the shoes I wore, but are sort of similar to give you an idea:
@college_query —those shoes look perfect. Comfort rules!
I’ve decided as officiant, will shop my closet and just wear something simple and unobtrusive. I will let D be my dresser—she has great taste and bride is one of her BFs.
@soozievt has certainly chosen many lovely options. I’m so glad some are en route!
