@Mom22039 you asked what others are considering. I have this one as an option for a rustic farm/garden wedding. No, that is not me in the pic. I hope to look half as good.
Cute teal dress and looks good for dancing. You’d have to have right foundation garment.
That’s cute.
What do we think about colors for August? Certainly, it’s deep mid summer and not yet fall, so I’d like to stay away from colors that scream fall. Also, I’ll be 62 so too youthful is not appealing.
Ballroom photo attached.
At 5’2” I would only look at dresses in petite sizes. Unless you can pull off non petite sizes easily, but I’m almost exactly the same size and the petite sizes were much more flattering.
It will cut down what’s available by quite a bit.
I went to Nordstrom and looked for dresses in my size, there was one! Ugh!
Sequins and bling in general are not my taste but I have been to many weddings where MOB/MOG have worn them for the same timeframe as your D’s wedding and they looked lovely. If that’s what you like, you should wear it.
I will say though, I love the Alfred Sung dresses- both short and long. Very classic, beautiful and look like they would be comfortable.
I had tiger lilies and spider mums and what looks like freesia at my August wedding, but I will admit mums might be too fall like. I just love them. That’s a beautiful space BTW!
Does your daughter and her fiancé have an overall color scheme for the wedding? Mine do, so that will determine the selection of flowers etc. If nothing close to that scheme is going to be available, white and green combo is always a classy default!
Just to give you some ideas why I’m not picking anything super formal… this is a pic of someone’s wedding at the venue our kiddos chose.
I am with you - I couldn’t handle multiple dresses from multiple places all coming at once and trying to keep it all straight!
I love spider mums. For August, I always think gladiolus and dahlias.
I probably should have looked at my shoe inventory before I ordered (these dressy shoes were all in two under the bed shoe storage containers) - and I actually have shoes that will work for all the dresses - I tried them all on yesterday. But if the silver flats that I ordered are super comfortable and look good on me, I may keep (DD thinks they look too ‘clunky’ which may be so, we shall see). I have shoes to work for the Nordstrom champagne color - but DD thinks I should keep those if they fit nice. Which I probably will do. I am one to hate not having something readily available at home for immediate or future use.
We had a dressy event last night - and thankfully I had an appropriate dress (that fit nicely) and shoes (dress had never been worn) - I went through the shoe inventory and had several black low heel sandal choices. I need to get to the pool and swim and diet to have my dresses fit better. I guess I will be eating more salads and more beef broth; some clear liquid days…if I swim or walk/jog, I definitely will cut dietary. More discipline!
I’m reporting in. I just ordered three dresses from Adrianna Papell — the same dress in three different colors! (I’ll soon have it in the house in 6 colors).
In case anyone else needs to know everything on the site is 25% off right now, for the holiday weekend. (Their marketing works!)
Tonight I returned $300 in other purchases.
@leftrightleft I love the Alfred Sung also. There’s just something about that ballroom that calls me to sparkles. If the setting was a little less grand… I just don’t know. I’m going to call some local bridal stores to see if I can find the Alfred Sung locally to try on. I’ll be happy to order it from any bridal store that let’s me try one on — and has a swatch book! Outside, to the church, photos, during the day, I think the Sung is a good choice. It’s just the 5 hours in the ballroom that makes me want the sparkles.
@BunsenBurner I’m not sure if the flowers question was for me. D has planned combos of white pink and green, with touches of blue. (With a cautious request to the floral designer that it not look like a baby shower!)
Thanks all!
I realize this is odd, but mums-Chrysanthemums, if that is what people are referring to, has significant meanings in different cultures. IMHO I really would not want to go there.
Love reading everyone’s advice & suggestions, so I was hoping you might be able to help…
Former MOB now looking for a dress as a wedding guest to a black-tie/opt wedding in April. Ugh - hate dress shopping! Wondering what your thoughts may be about wedding guest dress etiquette at a black-tie wedding…
This is a big (400 guests) fancy, nighttime wedding at the best country club in my city. The bride would love the women to wear gowns. Is it best to find just a solid color gown in a dark(er) color, or do you think a gown with embellishments is ok too? Would you consider a lighter or bright color gown or one with a floral pattern (the wedding is in the spring, and it will already be in the 80’s here)? Also, the ceremony is in a church in the afternoon and then there’s a lag before the reception at 5. Would it be weird to wear a gown to the ceremony (it feels wrong to wear a black evening gown to a church ceremony at 2pm in April)? Do I need 2 outfits?
Any and all thoughts are appreciated!
We have been to a couple of weddings with that time gap between the ceremony and reception. In those cases, I have worn something for the ceremony, and something different for the reception.
If it were me, I would choose a very nice cocktail length dress for the ceremony. If the bride would like to see gowns at the reception, choose a gown for the reception…and just change in between. Since it’s black tie optional, I think your gown choice really is up to you.
Ugh! We have to find D an outfit for a wedding at a nice country club this Saturday. Sadly it’s too late for mail order and she doesn’t have energy for shopping. She’s also hard to find clothing for as she’s a size 0 or 00. The good thing is she looks great in most outfits and if worse comes to worse, she can likely cobble something together or maybe have her housemates mail her an outfit from CA that’s in her closet. Not sure if that would get here in time either.
Is she in Hawaii with you??? Go to the nearest Target/TJMaxx/Walmart whatever you have and make do with whatever they have. Black pants or skirt and a pretty top. A dress or jumpsuit that is light and flowy. Women’s or girls department since she is so tiny! Consignment shop. If she can’t go you’ll have to buy something that isn’t fitted. Hope she has energy to attend the wedding in a few days!
Yeah, I’m probably going to Ross and buy an armful of things I think she may like and return those she doesn’t favor. We will figure something. Ross is right next to Costco and today I get 10% off as a SR.
She will manage to muster her energy for the wedding and reception but she’s been flaring for weeks now with her chronic mono.
Adult D2 is 00 and found a cute dress in the girls section at target to go to a wedding.
I just got back from Ross—bought a bunch of dresses and tops and will see what D says when she wakes up. It wasn’t crowded at Ross early in the day plus liked 10% SR discount.
Ross and Costco are a 5 minute drive. Target is further. I started with the “low hanging fruit.” She’s generally liked Ross merchandise in the past.
