Money for Merit

Has anyone here received a UChicago merit scholarship or does anyone know another person who has? I recently received a "sorry you're ineligible for finaid" letter in the mail and merit money possibilities seem incredibly crucial at the moment. I'm curious to know which characterics appear repeatedly in recipients or qualify an applicant for merit money (gpa, athletic ability, personality, service, artistic talent, curiousity, creativity, rec letters, test scores, leadership, awards won, likelihood for admission at competive schools, etc). Is the competition brutal (as I have a foreboding feeling it is) or can less-than-internationally-recognized-athletes/musicians/scholars receive the scholarships?

p.s. is uchicago finaid negotiable to any extent?

I'd appreciate annnny insight or information...

I've heard that it's pretty difficult to get one....usually the people that get them have also been accepted to several Ivy Leagues and other colleges of similar prestige. I don't know anyone personally who has gotten one, though...but then again I don't know anyone personally who goes to Chicago at all!

I know they give out 30 full scholarships a year. I don't know anything else about it.
