money issues

After visiting SMU last week, it's my first choice. Already accepted to SMU, as well as to UT Austin and its College of Communication. Both great schools and Advertising programs. The problem? SMU's tuition. I got Provost's scholarship of $12000/year and Meadow's scholarship of $5000/year, but my folks say SMU's cost will have to be closer to UT's cost for them to agree to pay. Our EFC exceeds SMU's COA, so no grants I assume. Any ideas? Might more scholarship money come trickling in from SMU in the next couple of months? Would it help if I spoke to someone at SMU and let them know that I would accept admission if a little more money were to come my way?

You can always try asking, and it would help to have a ballpark figure of the gap between your existing aid and what your parents are willing to pay. If the gap is relatively small, there’s a chance you could get some more money tossed your way. However, if the gap is big (more than a few thousand dollars), I would say it’s unlikely they’d add that much more aid, unless you happen to be someone they really want.

It can’t hurt to try  Worst that they can say is “No.”

Have you heard back from us on Need-Aid packages? Did you fill out the CSS Profile?

Give it a couple weeks and you should know. I suggest talking to your financial aid advisor at SMU and emailing your counselor and conveying your sincere interest.

Just completed CSS Profile. Not expecting any financial aid since our EFC is higher than the COA of SMU (wow, that’s a lot of acronyms!). Also, the folks have resources to pay for SMU (dipping into retirement funds, which I’ve heard you should never do), and they acknowledge that SMU would be a great choice for me, they just aren’t willing to spend double for SMU over UT, especially since UT does have a lot going for it as well.

Thanks for the input johnangle and polarscribe. I’ll take your suggestions and we’ll see what happens.

We did not complete the CSS profile (oversight) so does anyone know if it would still be worth completing it at this point since the priority deadline was Feb 15? btw, D was deferred in December and she is still waiting and waiting to hear a decision. Is there a way to check online?
