Monroe housing surprise

My S is on the 2nd floor of monroe in (according to the floorplan) one of four doubles on a mostly single/coed floor. He is participating in the NOLA program so he moved in to his room last night and he reports that there are NO singles on that floor and it is not coed. I am wondering if because of the large class size, they are doubling up kids in formerly single rooms? That seems awfully small... Now, I will say that it is more than possible that he is not reporting accurately but he seemed pretty confident.

Or that the floorplans are old and they knocked out walls a few years back. Wouldn’t shock me. I heard they did a renovation a while back, but I didn’t know any details at all. Just guessing.

PS: A quick search on the Tulane site revealed that there were renovations, I think shortly after Katrina, but no details.

PPS: Here is the disclaimer under the floor plan link: “Disclaimer: Please note that through recent renovations, facility upgrades and/or conversions, this floor plan may have a limited number of mis-labeled rooms. If you have questions, please ask us via e-mail applyhrl@tulane.edu.” The text description above the floor plans mentions renovations in 2004 and 2005 (so maybe it was all pre-Katrina), but still says nothing about converting singles to doubles.

I’m sure all will be revealed when we get down there this weekend! Just thought it was curious, not that it truly impacts my s.

I had a friend who lived on the 2nd floor of Monroe in a single last year… I never actually visited the floor so I’m not sure how many singles there were, but he seemed to indicate that it was mostly sophomores (which is atypical for Monroe). So I don’t know what’s going on this year, but I don’t think they knocked down any walls over the summer.

No, I am quite sure it wouldn’t have been this summer. It would have been during the renovations of 2004-05, if it happened at all. It is just random speculation by me that if in fact there are a lot of doubles on the 2nd floor now, that they made changes and never updated the floor plans that are online.

Last Year Monroe 2nd floor of Monroe was mostly singles for Sophomore boys. I also heard that this year they are doubling in those singles for lack of space. I don’t know if it is Freshman or sophomores. If your son is in a true double he is lucky.

Wow, those rooms are just not that big!! I knew almost 1700 enrolling was going to be a problem. They should have tried to get more sophs to live off campus. Ugh.

Thankfully, according to the floor plan he is in a “true double”. Although I guess it could be worse, they could have tried to stuff two girls into a single!

I don’t believe Monroe was renovated after Katrina. Monore was almost completely intact, no flooding and very little window breakage. S was a freshman who’d moved into a 4th floor dorm room that weekend.

As a matter of fact, any freshman who had moved into the dorm the day of the evacuation had all their stuff moved into the gym. This was to make room for the Belcor employees who essentially did all the clean up and flood remediation on the campus. However, later, in spring of 2006, there was a fire up on the higher floor and several rooms were affected, and lots of carpeting replaced from all the fire hoses.

Since then, however, I have no idea what happened in Monore…S moved onto the really awful sophomore housing in Irby. Now THAT was a building that needed renovations!!!

Yes, I would vote for just taking Irby and Phelps to the ground and putting in a much larger dorm where Phelps is. Not sure if I would put a dorm where Irby is or something else.

Anyway, it appears the last renovations were just barely pre-Katrina, summers of 2004 and 2005. My theory about rooms being expanded was all wet, I bet. I just cannot believe they will try and have two students live in one of those singles, though. We will await confirmation.

My S is in Irby and the condition of his room is horrendous. The light switch has water leaking out of it which i believe to be a fire hazard and his desk, mattress, carpet and set of drawers in closet were all completely trashed. I’m shocked that nothing was done prior to move-in.

I can accurately report that the singles remained singles in Monroe but that they are 100% freshmen. Something interesting for next years freshmen -apparently for $100they allowed kids to get in to the dorms Friday night. Friends took advantage of the offer and completely avoided the Saturday zoo!

Phelps and Irby really need to just go away. I wish I thought it would do much good, but raise a stink with housing if you haven’t already.

My S is in Phelps this year and I was actually surprised how clean it was when we moved him in on Friday. It had been freshly painted, as well. The mattress was old, but we put a 3-inch mattress pad on it, so that worked out OK. In his closet, the drawers looked like new. Even the carpet looked clean & fairly new. Compared to Sharp last year, this was definitely an upgrade.

That’s good that they fixed it up. Phelps was my first dorm for a couple of weeks. Similar situation to now, more students than they expected and we got tripled in a double room until they saw what was open due to no shows. Then I moved to Monroe in a regular double, with a 2nd year architecture student. I just think those style dorms are so old and could be replaced with nicer dorms that have more rooms.

I saw where Scott Cowen said the target for next year will be 1400 students, presumably to balance out the 1630 from this year to achieve the 1500 average they wanted in the first place. Of course if everything stays on schedule, the new dorm next to Butler will be open then as well.

The # of acceptances in the spring was 1687. Lost only 57 to the summer melt? Interesting.

It is rather interesting, since other things I read on here and elsewhere indicated a lot of the higher ranked privates went to their wait lists pretty substantially. Strong class. This year’s admissions strategy will be worth watching.

Yes - I did call housing and they did repair the light switch, door and replaced his desk so i feel a bit better about it!
