I'm back to my schedule again..

As it goes for next year

IB Math HL
IB Chem HL
IB Bio HL
IB Eng HL
IB His HL
IB CS SL
Physics 1(They are sticklers about not jumping right into IB Physics SL)

For 12th grade, those all go to 2 and CS becomes an HL, Physics become IB Physics SL.

Now, if I did diploma...

Take off IB Bio and add IB Span IV

IB Math HL
IB Chem HL
IB Eng HL
IB His HL
IB Span IV
IB CS SL
Phy 1

Senior year... I'm screwed.

I definitely want to do Computer Science HL, which I believe invalidates me because I will have 5 HLs. But if I tried to, I want to take Physics and can't get done with the IB exam my junior year. So I can't take TOK and Spanish V.

So what should I do?

lol i hate this IB system so much
woot for AP & Honors!

Well instead of saying you hate it, give reasons for why you hate it.

^Same reasons you just mentioned. So restrictive on achievement and how many classes you can take.

I had to decide between IB and AP, and ultimately went to AP. This was one of those reasons.

That’s true. Well we have no solid AP program in the county. So I’m stuck in IB.

So any real advice.

Calm down and don’t worry about taking so many HLs. Settling for an SL is not that bad. Depending on which college you attend you may get credit for it anyway.

My university gave me credit for a full year with my IB diploma, including specific class credit for my HLs and level credit for my SLs. It varies by school. If you want to make the most of your diploma, don’t pile up on HLs; find a university that will give you more credit for IB in general. Some won’t give you IB credit at all, and your HLs won’t be any more useful than SLs.

I found it really useful to bump down my Chem HL to an SL. The curricula aren’t too different and I didn’t need the specific credit for my major. Try to find a compromise… if you’re thinking of going into science, cut English or History down to an SL. If you’re planning to go into arts, cut down Chem, Math, or CS.

Also, which Spanish exam are you writing? There’s no such thing as IB Span IV or V. The exam will ultimately be either SL, HL or ab initio. That’s another area you can cut.

My point is, compromise. It’s simply not worth it to max out on HLs, especially if you aren’t sure what kind of credit your college will give you. I’d recommend that you look into your top few choices and see what they’ll give you for your diploma before taking so many HLs.

EDIT: Also, I’d recommend doing TOK in junior year. You’ll want to get the essay and the presentation done soon so you don’t have to worry about it while you’re busy with all your other classes and college applications in senior year.

We don’t have chemistry, english, or history SL. They’re all HL.

I meant Spanish V SL, though it could be HL.
AB initio doesn’t exist either at my school.
We don’t have many SL classes.

Why would taking more higher-level courses invalidate you from getting a diploma??

IB Says that we cannot take more than 4 HLs.

I’m in a similar dilemma, though I have much more time to think about it, but still wondering… By 4 HLs do they mean 4 HLs at once, or overall? Because since I’m taking IB Math HL as a sophomore and HL 2 as a junior, senior year I won’t have HL math. I’ll instead have multivariate calculus. In senior year my IB Business class also goes from SL to HL, so does that mean I could effectively take 5 HL classes through high school?

4 HLs overall. And I thought you couldn’t test out of HL math in Junior Year. I thought HL exams had to be taken senior year?

They do. I have to wait until senior year to take the exam if I want the IB diploma. It sucks, but that’s part of the reason why I’m planning on taking multivariate calc, so I don’t forget all of the material.

What school in Northern VA do you go to?
Yeah If it was me, I’d go into HL 2 after taking Precalc this summer, but I can’t.

Why??
I’d never heard of IB except on these boards, but now I’m glad I go to a regular school.

It’s their rule for some reason. I never exactly found out why. It’s stupid, but whatever.

JEB Stuart. It’s not a great school, but it at least has the IB program. My brother (who is about to graduate) says that no one from our school has been accepted to an ivy in long time. This year we’ve had like 1 person go to Georgetown, 1 to Amherst, and a handful to UVA/William and Mary. But yeah, I took a test in 6th grade that I scored high enough on to be eligible to take Algebra 1 in 7th grade. Took Geometry in 8th, Algebra 2 in 9th, etc.

I see. I go to Gar-Field in Northern Va. I came here taking Alg 1 in 7th grade, but my VA middle school put me in pre-algebra.

If I had it my way, I would’ve taken French V next year to continue with diploma.
We have someone take HL 2 Math twice for the hell of it.
