Morrill Scholarship and Morrill Scholars Program Class of 2021

I’m not completely sure, but I feel like they will notify you even if you don’t get in.

Morrill notifications go out through end of February, on a rolling basis.

Looking forward to the Distinction Interview weekend. Especially thrilled that OSU ODI is making this a family affair

@Cubanmom3, if distinction weekend’s are being held on February 3rd and 4th, do you believe all distinction nominations have already gone out? Perhaps, they only have remaining excellence and prominence awards pending…

@OHToCollege I honestly don’t know. All her email said was that she had received Prominence and was invited to interview for Distinction. I called the Morrill office because the weekend would cost over 1,000 and honestly I could not afford to go and was so worried it would hurt her chances but they were so nice and assured me it would not and she could do a Skype interview. I was also told that this year they had over 4000 applicants and only 300 were selected for scholarships and less than 100 for interviews. At that point I was a bit overwhelmed and forgot to ask how many would get the Distinction since I felt that would seem “greedy” after hearing the numbers. I am rooting for you!

Still waiting to hear back :~\

Hi all, I wanted to give you some hope… my daughter today was just notified via email she got Morrill and also is invited for the distinction weekend. We are very excited (out of state) and have not had a chance to really look into all what this means financially. I believe for out of state, we now pay in state tuition? Then I guess room and board remains the same. I believe she is more informed than I am. She is not in the top academics you see posted here (not sure exact stats) but in a very competitive hs, doesn’t rank, but good AP and honors courses. She has lots of demanding ECs, plus has done international service trip and interested in continuing to do them. I am looking forward to reading more about Morrill. Good luck to everyone!

@ballet13 At the very least, your daughter has free tuition. Morrill pays full tuition - in state is called Excellence, out of state is called Prominence. If she is chosen at the Distinction weekend, she will get cost of attendance - tuition plus room and board! Congratulations!

@mom1girl thanks…email was little confusing as it says:
“The Prominence Scholarship is equal to the value of in-state tuition and the non-resident fee…”
I thought that meant get in state tuition? Wow if total.tuition that would be incredible!

@ballet13 Congrats! Yes the Prominence scholarship is for FULL TUITION!!! I did a mom happy dance when my daughter got the email ! She is also invited to the Distinction weekend but due to cost she is douing a skype interview. GOOD LUCK !

@Cubanmom3 wow!!! Congrats to you! We are going to go to the distinction weekend. We were planning on a road trip to attend one of the admitted students days and really look closely at Ohio State. My daughter visited in the fall with her dad and loved it. I only toured 5 years ago with my son so we thought this would be a good opportunity. Now we can try do this event too…good luck to your daughter for distinction!

I just got admitted to Ohio State University (go bucks) about 2 hours ago and was wondering what that means for me in terms of the Morrill Scholarship. Surely they wouldn’t send a scholarship letter before I was actually accepted, right? Any idea if/when I’ll hear back?

I also applied for Ohio State Honors.

We just got the letter in the mail today for the Maximus Scholarship. My son was accepted in November. He was also accepted in Honors. He had a 35 ACT score, 6 AP classes, EC but no leadership positions. He does not play sports either. He also works part-time. He did not get invited to interview for Morrill.

Daughter also got Maximus. I hope that does not mean she is out of the consideration for Morrill. That would be disappointing as she too is 35 ACT and top of her school. She wrote a good essay on promoting diversity and has good EC. When I called the ODI I got the impression that bulk of the distinction invitations have gone out but not the excellence level awards yet. I was told they will award distinction/prominence awards all the way through end of February.

Son received Maximus today also. Was also wondering if he is out of the running for the Morrill scholarship? Has full academic rides to 2 other D1 universities and was appointed to USMA last Friday but OSU is my alma mater. Great school! Would love for it to be on the table.

It does seem like OSU is inclined to award higher scholarship amounts to diversity over merit. They have nearly 300 Morrill scholarships (minimum full-tuition, IS or OOS, to full-ride) to give to students who promote diversity (largely demonstrated via a written essay), but less than half-tuition scholarships (Maximus) to merit. Only 25 or so Eminence (full ride) scholarships are awarded to absolutely top of the class students, based on combination of merit and additional essays. I am puzzled by this.

@OHToCollege Seems like fewer Morrills this year. Have they posted the stats?

I tend to disagree that the Morrill scholarship is largely based on the essay. My daughter’s stats put her at the top of any merit scholarship consideration ( ACT 33, 5.19/4.0 GPA, class President and significant ECs) regardless of the fact that she is Hispanic. She recieved the Promince and is interviewing for Distinction at OSU but has also received full tuition scholarship at several other schools not based on her ethnicity. Just my opinion…

@cubanmom What do you think they based it on then? My D did not get any Morrill and her essay was quite good. My feeling is they are looking for lower stat minorities and/or lower income students. D also applied for the Eminence and we’ll see how that goes.

@itsgettingreal17 I would not know since my daughter is neither a "lower stat "minority or a lower income student. She did start a club that raised funds to send 3 girls to school in Nepal, volunteered over 300 hours in 12 months and spent the summer working in a camp for children with muscular dystrophy maybe her dedication to serving others was what OSU saw.
