Hi. My son was admitted to IU and is going to visit next Monday. We are from out of state and booked the trip before we realized that Monday will be finals (he's a big Colts fan and is going to the game on Sunday).

There are no official tours that day. He's meeting with the advisor for the major he wants to study but I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts or suggestions of things to see/do that will highlight the campus.

What is his Major? You might get more specific recommendations. Visit Welles Library, Memorial Union, Auditorium,
new Rec Center, a dorm in each of the “neighborhoods” NW, Central, South. Generally the NW dorms are most popular ( and rumors of lots of parties), Central is academic, South is for Teachers and Music Majors. There are exceptions in each of course. Maybe you can eat lunch in the Woodlands… a new Dining Hall in South, it’s great!

D liked to see the dorms, the main dining room and the library which she searched for quiet spaces and other places to “hide”. She liked to determine the distance between the three places figuring she’d be at one of the three anytime after classes were finished for the day and didn’t want to have to schlep across a huge campus to get from one place to another. YMMV

Since he’s a human bio major, might want to check out Jordan Hall (on 3rd street) and the chemistry building (near Jordan Hall). You might also want to visit the IMU (largest student union in the country), Sample Gates, Kirkwood Ave, the SRSC (rec center), Wells Library, the Auditorium/Showalter Fountain, and just generally walk the Old Crescent (from Sample Gates back towards the IMU). Other buildings he’ll probably have classes in are Ballantine, Woodburn, Swain Halls, and a few others–but since finals will be starting, I’d avoid those. I’d also stop at TIS or the IU Bookstore and pick up some IU gear!

You’ll see a lot of sleep deprived students in sweatpants looking stressed out–don’t worry!

IU’s campus is beautiful, although winter sans snow is probably the ugliest you’ll see it. Wear good walking shoes, and if it’s supposed to be rainy–wear shoes with good traction since the brick or wooden sidewalks can get slick.
