The most OVERrated college in my state would have to be the University of Virginia, while the most UNDERrated is probably Virginia Tech.

ah, a twist on a classic CC thread…interesting.

overrated-NYU, SUNY Bing(where I’m from, anyway)
underrated-Vassar, URochester

interesting thread…

overrated: Minnesota State University Mankato
underrated: Carleton College (much better regarded on CC than it is with high school students)

Overrated: USC
Underrated: Claremont Colleges

State: Florida

Overrated: University of Florida - I’m not part of the guard which feels that take-home recording of lectures are acceptable in teaching college-level classes.

Underrated: Rollins College - If you get into the 3-2 Business Program (which isn’t too competative) then you are attending the best college in a large state for a widely-selected major. Class Sizes under 25, a gorgeous campus, great weather, and a scenic surrounding community don’t hurt (although dungeon-like dorms, lack of sports initiative, a general lack of facilities, and an abundance of drugs and alcohol do).

Overrated: UC Berkeley

Underrated: Loyola Marymount

Overrated: Duke (Somebody’s going to hurt me for this) and UNC (for OOS)

Underrated: UNC (for IS) and UNC School of the Arts

California:

Underrated: Mills College, any of the Claremont Colleges.

Overrated: Tulane

For Cali, the Claremont Colleges are deff. the most underrated. They are simply amazing… and unknown in my whole NorCal community.

Perhaps I’m overrating some colleges, but I can’t seem to pinpoint an overrated one. California has some amazing colleges (i.e. Stanford, UC Berkeley…)

1) The most underrated is NC is definitely Davidson. It’s easily on par with any of the top LACs but gets overlooked because it’s in the South (that’s pathetic, people).

My alum interviewer from Chicago attempted to persuade me to attend Davidson instead (where he teaches) because he thought the academics are on par and the social life superior.

2) UNC Chapel Hill is surprisingly underrated. A lot of people consider it second fiddle to UVA, which is definitely not the case.

3) Wake Forest, UNC Asheville, and UNC Wilmington are also underrated. The supposed hippie/liberal atmosphere at UNCA, however, is vastly overrated.

I wouldn’t say there are any overrated schools in NC. Duke is a top 10 university and deserves its fair share of recognition. Elon has also been receiving a fair amount of attention lately. Schools like Guilford and Warren Wilson are good but getting about as much recognition as they deserve.

Connecticut!

Overrated: (no one’s gonna like this…) Yale
Underrated: Connecticut College and UConn.

UConn’s getting much harder to get into lately…

Massachusetts:

Overrated: Harvard, Tufts, BC, Holy Cross
Underated: Stonehill, Wheaton, WPI, Clark

Overrated: Indiana University Bloomington (EVERY senior from my school wants to go there - I went on a visit and HATED it!)
Underrated: Notre Dame (At least around here - I only know of 3 seniors who are even trying to get into ND!)

but then again this is based on student interest and not prestige (obviously)

Overrated: I dunno, Johns Hopkins?

Underrated: Maybe UMD-CP, but definitely UMBC

Add Geneseo to your overrated and Stonybrook to your underrated and I’d agree with that.

Vassar is HUGELY underrated, maybe not nationwide, but in NY/on LI it definitely is.

Overrated: UCs

Underrated: Harvey Mudd, Pomona, Pitzer, etc

Overrated: TCNJ and Rutgers for non science/med

Underrated:none lol

Massachusetts:

Overrated: Harvard, MIT
Underrated: Brandeis, Amherst, Williams
(at my school atleast)
