I have to agree with aufossil. Rice may be overrated within Texas; it seems to be a top choice for many of Texas’s top high school students. Rice could also benefit from more geographical diversity too… I get excited when I meet people who aren’t from Texas because there are SO MANY from Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, rural Texas, etc. However, outside of Texas, especially in the Midwest, the Northeast, and the West, I strongly believe that Rice is the MOST UNDERRATED top 20 university in the nation. This is part of the reason I decided to turn down some better known top 20 schools to go to Rice.

Top students in areas outside of Texas/Louisiana/Florida/Georgia rarely apply to Rice. In my high school, a top 100 high school, the top students usually applied to Ivies, WashU, Duke, Northwestern, Stanford, MIT, UChicago, Vanderbilt, and Emory… I was the only one who applied to Rice this year and the first one to attend since 1999. Rice truly deserves higher name recognition up North… it offers an undergraduate-focused, Ivy League academics; a lot of personalized attention that some of the larger top 20 schools do no provide; a very good financial value (awards 30% of incoming freshmen merit aid, the highest percentage among the top 20 school, and ranked #4 by Kiplinger’s and Princeton Review for Best Value); a unique residential college system; and a great quality of life.

Sure, it is not always peaches and sunshine here… there were many times when I had second thoughts about attending Rice, but I think that is natural for many who take a long time adjusting to college. Also, with the increase in enrollment, Rice is losing its some of its uniqueness with larger lecture classes, for example. It is not a perfect university, and there are some universities with strengths in areas that Rice does not excel in. Outside of the Texas/Southwest region, I can confidently say it is a very underrated top university.

Almost all the top LACs, including Pomona, Williams, Amherst, Swarthmore, Claremont McKenna, Middlebury, Trinity, etc. are quite underrated as well.
