Most OVERrated and or UNDERrated Colleges in your State ?

OHIO

Overrated:
None

Underrated:
Wooster, Denison, Wittenberg, Hiram, Ohio Weslyan, Ohio Northern, Otterbein, John Carroll, Case Western, Mount Union, Heidleberg

VIRGINIA

Overrated: None

Underrated:
Mary Washington, W&L, JMU, Randolph Macon, Hollins, Sweetbriar, Emory & Henry

FLORIDA

Overrated: UF

Underrated: Rollins, FAU, FIU, Univ of Tampa, USF

Mass.-underrated-WPI, Holy Cross, Tufts.

NJ-
Overrated-Rutgers (About every kid I’ve asked in my school says Rutgers is on their list), TCNJ
Underrated-Rowan, Ramapo…

I am amused by how many people say William and Mary is underrated; I have never heard anything but glowing reports about W&M. The line is Jefferson started UVa because his kids couldn’t getin to W&M. In-laws all went to W&M.

"Tennessee

Over-rated: University of Tennessee, Vanderbilt
For a majority of AP high school students in Tennessee, UTK and Vandy are some of the only schools applied to.

Under-rated: none. The education in Tennessee is not up to par with any state in the north. "

Says the person whose user name is “tebowforheisman”. I can understand you saying the public schools aren’t that great, but comparing the public schools in TN with those in the “north” I’d say they’re more or less equal, maybe on the lesser side. But to say that Vanderbilt isn’t on a higher level is just plain ignorant.

NY:

overrated: columbia, NYU, suny binghamton, suny geneseo
underrated: cornell (just because everyone thinks it’s the reject of the ivies. it definitely is not), vassar, skidmore

Sudan

Overrated: University of Medical Sciences and Technology
Underrated: University of Khartoum

Oh wait, lol

^lol

Maine
Overrated: None (maybe Bates if I had to pick)
Underrated: College of the Atlantic

CT:

Overrated: Yale
Underrated: UConn (It will be an elite public school very soon, it’s top in New England, but I can see it up there with Michigan, UNC, UVA, Cal in some point in the future), USCGA, University of New Haven (for ANYTHING science, esp. forensics; great facilities being built right now)

Overrated: None
Underrated: University of Michigan
I heard people talk about how it’s only marginally better than MSU and “not that great.” But it’s actually one of the nation’s top universities, except a lot of people at my school would rather go to a different, usually worse school, farther away from home.

Very typical of younger Michiganians. “The grass is greener elsewhere” syndrome. Of course, if you’re from the deep south and/or far west this time of year, it really is.

Overrated: Cal and UCLA (especially with all the budget cuts – may not be overrated for long)
Underrated: USC (a simply amazing school)

Indiana

Overrated: Indiana U. Everyone in my senior class wants to go there, and they just party like crazy. The Kelley school has a better rep though
Underrated: not sure, Purdue Engineering school maybe. It is one of the best engineering schools in the country but no one in the state knows it.

You’re spot on about Purdue, tonytet.

Michigan:

Overated: All the large public schools (yes that includes michigan) where undergrads are “taught” by teaching assistants.

Underated: Most smaller schools, Hope and Kalamazoo.

General
Overated: Universities with a strong focus on national visibility in Division 1 sports, esp. football.
Underated: Universities and Colleges in urban settings

Overrated: The Military Academies
Underrated: Star Fleet Academy and Police Academy

Fogcity, that holds especially true for schools like Georgia Tech, Duke, UNC, UVA, Illinois, Cal, UCLA, Purdue, Stanford, etc…, right?

I have to agree with aufossil. Rice may be overrated within Texas; it seems to be a top choice for many of Texas’s top high school students. Rice could also benefit from more geographical diversity too… I get excited when I meet people who aren’t from Texas because there are SO MANY from Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, rural Texas, etc. However, outside of Texas, especially in the Midwest, the Northeast, and the West, I strongly believe that Rice is the MOST UNDERRATED top 20 university in the nation. This is part of the reason I decided to turn down some better known top 20 schools to go to Rice.

Top students in areas outside of Texas/Louisiana/Florida/Georgia rarely apply to Rice. In my high school, a top 100 high school, the top students usually applied to Ivies, WashU, Duke, Northwestern, Stanford, MIT, UChicago, Vanderbilt, and Emory… I was the only one who applied to Rice this year and the first one to attend since 1999. Rice truly deserves higher name recognition up North… it offers an undergraduate-focused, Ivy League academics; a lot of personalized attention that some of the larger top 20 schools do no provide; a very good financial value (awards 30% of incoming freshmen merit aid, the highest percentage among the top 20 school, and ranked #4 by Kiplinger’s and Princeton Review for Best Value); a unique residential college system; and a great quality of life.

Sure, it is not always peaches and sunshine here… there were many times when I had second thoughts about attending Rice, but I think that is natural for many who take a long time adjusting to college. Also, with the increase in enrollment, Rice is losing its some of its uniqueness with larger lecture classes, for example. It is not a perfect university, and there are some universities with strengths in areas that Rice does not excel in. Outside of the Texas/Southwest region, I can confidently say it is a very underrated top university.

Almost all the top LACs, including Pomona, Williams, Amherst, Swarthmore, Claremont McKenna, Middlebury, Trinity, etc. are quite underrated as well.

In my state of California

I agree that the Claremont schools are underrated.

USC is overrated. I have heard 3 people tell me that Chapman is on the same level as USC and UCLA - that is nowhere near the truth.
Also, a lot of people I know think of NYU as such an awesome place, but its academics are not on par with a lot of schools that people compare it to. Same goes for Boston College.
