Most OVERrated and or UNDERrated Colleges in your State ?

Ohio.
I think Miami is overrated.
John Carroll and Youngstown State are highly overrated where I live, but I don’t know if they’re overrated in general.

MA

overrated: Harvard, MIT, UMass Amherst (all the smart kids in my community apply to the first two while everyone else applies to UMass and ends up going there)
underrated: Lesley U, Emerson (I’m the only kid in my class that applied to either of these)

MASS. overrated: BU, BC, Smith. underrated: Holy Cross, Tufts, Olin.

Virginia: would agree with previous poster, William and Mary is hugely underrated.

Quebec (if it is permissible to talk about a given region in another country)

Overrated: McGill (for anything other than biomedical or healthcare programs; it is as though the school’s reputation is built almost entirely on biomedical research), Bishop’s

Underrated: Laval and U Montreal (for out-of-province)

New Jersey Most Overrated Rider University
Most underrated Rutgers University

Kentucky!

Overrated: University of Louisville
Underrated: Centre College

Sent from my SGH-I897 using CC

Illinois
Overrated: Lake Forest College, Loyola, Depaul
Underrated: UChicago, UIUC, Knox, Illinois Wesleyan

New Hampshire

Overrated: Dartmouth
Underrated: Not sure… It’s more like the rest are all unrated, haha.

New York

Overrated : NYU
Underrated : Cornell

Florida

Overrated:
-New College of Florida. It is considered so underrated that I find it overrated. The Academics are great, don’t get me wrong, but the campus life sucks if you are not the specific type of hippie New College likes. And the food sucks. And the dorms suck.

Underrated:
-UCF: Great facilities and great engineering. A great safety school and one of the few schools that is worth going to that pays you to go there.

New York

Overrated Locally:
• NYU - this seems to be everyone’s dream school.
• SUNY Binghamton - If I hear the term “poor man’s Harvard” one more time I’m going to go crazy. Not to mention, including financial aid Harvard would more than likely be the cheaper of the two.
• St. John’s Fischer - a lot of people from my school end up here, and because of that it has gained a reputation.

Underrated Locally:
• Hamilton - because it is so close, no one even gives it the time of day. Sort of a grass is greener approach.

Overrated Nationally:
•NYU

Underrated Nationally:
•Cornell - always considered the bottom of the Ivy League
• University of Rochester

Overrated: NYU - there was a kid from my school who got accepted there and everyone was fawning over him and his “prestigious school” acceptance. He had like a 1700 SAT and took 2 AP classes.

Underrated: Duke - whenever I tell people I want to go there they respond with something along the lines of “you have a 2360 SAT, you could go anywhere you want, why would you want to go to some basketball state school?” Yes, most of them don’t realize that Duke is a private school and ranked in the top ten regularly

"Underrated: Duke - whenever I tell people I want to go there they respond with something along the lines of “you have a 2360 SAT, you could go anywhere you want, why would you want to go to some basketball state school?”

That will come as a shock to some posters here who feel that academically Duke is well known all over the country.

california
o: usc, san diego state(seriously people its not next to the beach, its 20 minutes away, you can take the trolley), and any impacted csu( besides cal poly)

U: claremont mckenna, pomona, pitzer( not every socal person knows their reputations, hidden gems)
sacramento state
santa clara university
uc santa cruz
cal poly pomona
and … cal state channel islands, yep

underrated-Olin, Holy Cross, Tufts. overrated-BU, BC.

North Carolina again

Under-DAVIDSON! I would say half of the people in my school have never heard of it and it is super competitive. ECU- super super super underrated. Especially for their honors college and medical programs.

Overrated:Wake Forest-I see Wake as private UNC only more expensive and easier to get into

In this thread, it seems the “overrated” schools are just the schools traditionally considered good, and the “underrated” schools happen to be the posters alma mater. With that in mind…

MA
OR - BU/BC - The “elite” schools for the rich and average. BC especially seems to consider itself almost an ivy, but its coasting on alumni boosting and private school elitism. Not bad schools, but not great.

UR - Northeastern - workhorse, their work/internship program is incredibly valuable.

UW
OR - Seattle U - Alumni will tell you all day about what a hidden gem it is, but the stats and the price tell the real story. Sometimes the underdog is the underdog for a reason. If you are a motivated student and don’t need handholding this school is not worth the money.

UR - Whitman - Underhyped.

Overrated: NYU, SUNY Bing, and SUNY Stony Brook
Underrated: SUNY Geneseo and RIT (Rochester institute of technology)
