CalTech is NOT underrated, The reason they are not well know is because they only have 900 students or 200 freshmen.

Way-Overrated top 15 USNWR rated schools

Way-Underrated 45-50 USNWR rated schools (especially Honors programs)

overrated- Ohio State, Case western

underrated- Muskingum, Ohio University

overrated: stanford
underrated: harvey mudd

why do posters think emory is overrated?

in california:
underrated:
UCSD and UCirvine, also USC people usually think of it as a rich spoiled kids school and for the football team but it has top business, eng. and film schools..

also underrated:University of denver, Loyola chicago, SMU, baylor, LMU, university of cincinnati,U of san diego, university of oregon...there is a lot of universities that are well known in their states but very underrated here on cc..

as for overrated:NYU, UCLA, UVA,..they are good school but not as good as people male them look...

overrated- Berkeley

underrated- KENYON!

Based on what I've read, University of Florida....very delusional supporters imo.

No, I believe most underrated is Berkeley. It was ranked #1 for many, many years (higher than HYPS obviously), and still holds some of the best faculty and smartest students in the US. It lacks resources and structure, which have given way to their drops in rank. An employer on the west coast would find B more favorable than some of higher-ranked schools such as UChicago.

Most overrated: No idea. Don't know a lot of schools well enough to make such a decision.

Stanford's overrated.

Berkeley's underrated.

emory, vanderbilt, Berkeley overrated

Brown underrated

overrated: Wash U, Vanderbilt, UPenn (besides Wharton),
underrated: University of Chicago

Overrated: Harvard

Underrated: Miami (Fl)

Underated: My school

Overated: Your school

Overrated: Harvard

Underrated: University of Susquehanna

overrated - penn state
at least around here.
it’s good, but many many people get into its other campuses, which are much easier to get into, and then just transfer in.

underrated - northeastern
it has the same average SAT range as boston university (and many other higher ranked schools) and its acceptance rate is 35% compared with boston university’s 54%.
and boston university is 60, while northeastern is 96 (us news rankings). tied with northeastern are university of arizona, suny stony brook, auburn university… all with significantly lower admissions criteria (SAT scores and GPA). so… i just don’t really get it.

BU’s acceptance rate is high because of the College of General Studies. Other than that, it’s probably around 35%.
US News rankings are irrelevant.

Overrated: WUSTL, duke, cornell, carnegie mellon

Underrated: Boston College, SUNY Geneseo

overrated: BROWN, DUKE

underrated: CORNELL

Northeastern has a five-year co-op program that many students take advantage of, alternating classroom time with real-world work experience. It has a misleadingly low 4-year graduation rate, which hurts it in USNWR rankings. Its students, intelligent and capable as they may be, are probably less intellectual/interested in traditional academia, which may hurt its PA score.

Employers generally care a lot less about where you went to school than they do about your work experience though, so unless you’re planning on further education its lower stature in the rankings doesn’t really matter.
