@LBad96- UNC is dealing with this and it is not an issue on campus or on tours. It is never discussed by the students- many have no clue or have forgotten that this even happened. Applications actually went up, not down. And “elitist” students who think that students who attend schools other than Duke or CH are inferior? Really? I am glad you put your little note at the bottom.
Binghamton speaks highly about itself when you visit, but really- don’t all schools speak that way about themselves? Are they supposed to tell students on their tours that they realize many of them will get into “better” schools but their parents will refuse to pay? People will decide for themselves whether Binghamton is a “Public Ivy.” It is certainly not overrated on CC.
Very subjective thread, which is fine. It is always interesting to hear different opinions.
@twogirls those two schools have a reputation for having pretty snobby students, though. I’ve seen their YikYaks and they laughed at us when we lost go Duke in basketball. Being called “UNC Wannabes”, especially by those Tarheels, really annoyed the crap out of me.
I’ll add TCNJ. To me the only reason this school could get high rankings on Bloomberg and such is because it’s the only Jersey school that manages to keep a decent number of decent talent in-state for non-financial reasons. It’s definitely overrated in-state, they think they’re FAR better than Rutgers when their academic edge isn’t nearly as wide as they would like to think. Also, it’s completely unheard of OOS, as only 7% of students are from OOS. If it wants to move out of the overrated section, they have to do more to attract OOS students.
@newjerseygirl98 no one in my school has ever heard of Bloomfield lol. I don’t think anyone’s even applied tbh. Horrendous school, one of the worst in the state. Which is saying a lot, because our state is pretty terrible with higher education!! And I agree with you on Quinnipiac being overpriced, as a matter of fact I’d add Hofstra as well. One of the most overpriced schools in the country, one of the worst values considering you’re getting only average academics in a sketchy-at-best area. Any school with a less than 80% retention rate should be looked at with a raised eyebrow.
@bodangles one would be inclined to think that the money he gave them would be therefore tainted. I don’t see how it would exactly hurt them to do the right, conscionable thing. If they take away his degree, they should be able to say “we don’t want or need your money anymore”. Simple IMO.
@Chardo it’s in the Deep South. The Deep South (Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, West Virginia, Kentucky) has, on average, the highest poverty levels along with the lowest education levels in the entire country. Those together breed ignorance, a subset of which is racism. Now, I am in NO WAY suggesting that all white Bama students are racist - that would be simply foolish. But that state, that area of the country does carry an unfortunate reputation with it.
It’s just money. You really don’t understand how giving back between $250,000 and $500,000, according to a quick google search (that many schools just don’t have lying around, liquidized) would hurt the university? And its students?
I am in no way condoning or supporting Cosby’s abhorrent actions, but it’s strange how you say that “it’s just money” and yet you go on to the rest of your point. UMass gets many donations each year, I think they would be fine lol. It’s not like their campus police, for example, cares about their students anyways (referring to the informant scandal, a quick Google search will pop up). It just all seems very mismanaged and even a bit dishonest.
The problem is that USNews takes input-based measures like admit rate (which is very small for OOS to UNC because they have that 15% limit on OOS), but by alumni accomplishment rate measures, UMich is clearly above UNC while UW-Madison is about the same (maybe a little above) UNC.
I think that’s the case for a LOT of schools in the top 30 or so. And one of the reasons why I’d like to see “acceptance rate” downplayed as a factor in ranking algorithms.
Overrated: Any school that will put you into debt for the next few decades of your life. Where you monthly payment will amount to the cost of a mortgage.
Underrated: Any school rejected because it’s not ‘highly regarded/elite/USNWR high rated’ that would give you a great education and leave you with no debt.
“It’s just money” as in “it’s not magically cursed,” not “money means nothing.” Money is important to education. Universities are battling brutal cuts left and right.
